We had a great crew and a packed morning at the Immune Health workshop on Saturday! They role-played immune cells, sampled various immune-supportive herbal teas and foods (such as shiitake mushrooms, raw garlic sauce, and rosehip jam), and then we made a delicious elderberry echinacea syrup as a take-home project. The synergy at these events is always so much fun, everyone brings something to the table!

I am always blown away by the awesome teens at Cypress Adventures, Inc.! They are respectful, engaged, and positively joyful when I come to teach my experiential nutrition program. Cypress is making such a positive impact on our community, and I am honored to be part of the team that helps these young people thrive.

This Saturday they are hosting a family-friendly music festival here in Hartsville to raise money for this free after-school program that is changing lives! I will be serving up mocktails and other healthy treats, along with other vendors and food trucks.

I did a double take when I saw this unique vending machine at the airport in Minneapolis! They had a variety of healthy mason jar meals full of protein and veggies, as well as chia pudding with berries for breakfast. There was even a recycling spot to return your glass jar. Farmer's Fridge was founded by a traveling salesman who was frustrated by how hard it was to get fresh, healthy food on the road. Way to go! Would you like to see something like this in South Carolina?

Our Story

As I was pulling the trailer down to South Carolina to start our new life in Hartsville, I knew I would miss the friends we had made and the practice we had built during our 11 years in Brevard, North Carolina. But already I was missing the mountains! Driving along the monotonous highway, I started musing over what to call my new practice when the name Kalmia Wellness popped into my head.

Kalmia latifolia is the botanical name for mountain laurel, a beautiful shrub which is abundant in the mountains of Western North Carolina. It is normally not found in the flat lands (as the name implies), but at Kalmia Gardens in Hartsville there is a steep north-facing bluff where the mountain laurel thrives. I had always enjoyed wandering through Kalmia Gardens during previous visits to my husband’s home town. Now this lovely and peaceful oasis is my little piece of the mountains right here in Hartsville!

At Kalmia Wellness we use nature as our guide. Studies show that spending time in nature, whether hiking on mountain trails or sitting on the porch listening to the birds, reduces stress. We can also access the healing power of nature through the food we choose and the plant medicines we find all around us. The common dandelion that persistently shows up in our lawns contains valuable compounds that help detoxify the body!

My goal is to empower you to achieve your health goals. Taking the time to listen to you and your story is a very important part of the process. There is more to your health than the sum of your symptoms. Education is always a big part of what I do, helping you determine what is and isn’t working and implementing a doable plan to make healthy lifestyle changes. Real food nutrition is the gas that powers your engine, while custom herbal formulas, targeted nutrients, and specific homeopathic remedies further open the doors to deep healing. Welcome to the journey!
