Smoke detectors save lives...

The two occupants at this fire were lucky that their dog woke up when the fire started. The residence did not have working smoke detectors and they escaped moments before the fire spread into the living room which would have cut off their escape.

From the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services "Every home is required to have working smoke alarms and most are also required to have carbon monoxide alarms. Learn what kind you need to have and where they should be placed in your homes.

When purchasing new smoke or carbon monoxide alarms, be sure to choose alarms that are listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or Intertek (ETL). Avoid counterfeit alarms by selecting products from a well-known national brand."

Holiday Fire Safety Reminder: Properly Dispose of Your Christmas Tree! 🎄

As the holidays wind down, don’t let your Christmas tree become a fire hazard in your home. Fresh trees begin to dry out quickly and a dry tree can ignite in seconds. 🔥

The Fire Department recently fought a fire that most likely started with a that was too close to bedding. Space heaters need space! Keep them at least three feet from anything that can burn. Always plug them into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip, and turn them off before you leave the room or go to sleep! Keep safe as you keep warm this winter: https://ow.ly/9TMN50XNcrW

Today we remember Captain Robert Johnson, who passed away on this date in 2009 in the Line of Duty from Occupational Cancer.

Bobby J was a fixture of the Harwich Fire Department, a legacy whose father served as Deputy Chief, the President of Harwich Professional Firefighters Local 2124 for 20 years, and a Trustee for the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts (PFFM).

Bobby J served as a Firefighter/Paramedic until being promoted to Captain of Fire Prevention.

A good friend, an excellent firefighter and a true brother, he is still missed everyday by those that knew him and worked with him.

Cooking is the leading cause of residential fires, and the holiday season is no exception. Don't let a fire ruin the most wonderful time of the year! Stay safe in the kitchen, be sure you have working and alarms on every level of your home, and inform guests of your home escape plan in the event of a fire: https://ow.ly/Q8Tg50UuWxM

Teens: That TikTok trend of 'room glow-ups' with 20+ LED strips? That’s a fire hazard. Stick to UL-certified lights.

If you spent the day wrapping presents make sure you properly dispose of excess wrapping paper. Burning it in a fireplace can lead to dangerous flare-ups. 🔥
