Today Chief LeBlanc was notified that the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security has awarded the Harwich Fire Department $8,631.54 through the Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant Program.

This funding will be used to purchased Personal Protective Equipment(PPE) for Harwich Firefighters. Each Harwich Firefighter has two sets of PPE, as required by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standard. The Standard requires one set of PPE be less than 10 years old and one set be less than 5 years old.

The Fire Department has had a program in place for over a decade that replaces 6 sets of PPE each year. Through the support of the Town and Taxpayers, this program has ensured that every firefighter has equipment that meets the NFPA Standard.

A complete set of PPE includes a helmet, a protective hood, 1 pair of boots, 1 pair of gloves, a structural firefighting coat and structural firefighting pants. The cost to equip each firefighter is about $5,800.

Thank you to Governor Maura Healey, the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security and Massachusetts Department of Fire Services for your support.

Joint training with the Harbormaster’s office staff and the boat operators from Harwich Fire.

Harbormaster Harker has spearheaded training our boat operators to a standard necessary for response into the waters of Harwich. This collaborative effort works well for Harwich to ensure there are qualified personnel available day and night to respond to any emergency on the water.

Both departments will continue to develop this joint effort to provide the best level of service for Harwich and the surrounding waters.
