Dark circles under your child’s eyes — tired… or a sign of something deeper?

In many cases, these “dark circles” (often called allergic shiners) are not just about lack of sleep.
They can be linked to how your child is breathing and how well they are sleeping.

When nasal breathing is restricted — due to allergies, congestion, or enlarged adenoids —
blood flow under the eyes can slow down, leading to that darker appearance.

At the same time, disrupted breathing during sleep can affect sleep quality, even if your child is in bed for enough hours.

Over time, this may show up as:
• Mouth breathing (day or night)
• Snoring or noisy breathing
• Restless sleep or frequent waking
• Daytime tiredness or hyperactivity
• Difficulty focusing

These signs are often overlooked — but they can be important clues about your child’s airway and overall development.

👉 It’s not about jumping to conclusions —
it’s about recognising patterns and knowing when to look a little deeper.

Every child develops speech at their own pace—but there are important milestones along the way. If your child is difficult to understand, struggles with certain sounds, or is falling behind peers, it may be time for a closer look.

Early support can make a meaningful difference in communication and confidence.

Bottle feeding vs breastfeeding — why does it matter for oral development?

From a myofunctional therapy point of view, feeding is not just about nutrition.
It’s one of the first functional patterns that shapes how your baby’s mouth, tongue, and airway develop.

🤱 Breastfeeding (when possible)

Breastfeeding requires:
• A wide latch
• Strong tongue elevation
• Coordination of suck–swallow–breathe
• Active use of the jaw and facial muscles

This helps:
✔ Support proper tongue posture
✔ Encourage nasal breathing
✔ Promote wider palate development
✔ Build a strong foundation for chewing, speech, and airway

🍼 Bottle feeding

Bottle feeding can absolutely support a baby — and is sometimes necessary.

But functionally, it often requires:
• Less tongue elevation
• Less muscular effort
• Different sucking patterns

Over time, this may contribute to:
• Lower tongue posture
• Narrower palate
• Preference for mouth breathing
• Compensatory patterns

⚠️ Important

This is not about “good vs bad” or parent guilt.

Many babies are bottle-fed — and do very well.
👉 It’s about understanding function and supporting it where needed.

💡 What can help?

• Choosing a bottle that encourages a deeper latch
• Supporting oral function early
• Screening for tongue-tie or feeding difficulties
• Working with a myofunctional therapist if concerns arise

Early feeding patterns matter —
because they influence how your child will breathe, chew, speak, and grow.

If your child has a tongue-tie, you may have been told:
“Let’s just release it.”

But here’s what many parents are not told 👇

👉 Myofunctional therapy is essential both before AND after tongue-tie release.

Why does this matter?

A tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) is not just a piece of tissue —
it affects how the tongue moves, rests, and functions.

Over time, the body adapts:
• The tongue may sit low instead of on the palate
• Breathing may shift to mouth breathing
• Swallowing patterns compensate
• Muscles learn incorrect habits

👉 Simply releasing the tie does NOT automatically fix these patterns.

What does the research show?

Studies (including work by Dr. Zaghi and colleagues) highlight that
combining frenuloplasty with myofunctional therapy leads to better outcomes.

Why?
Because therapy helps:
• Prepare the muscles BEFORE release
• Improve mobility and coordination AFTER
• Prevent reattachment and compensation
• Support proper breathing, feeding, and speech

What does myofunctional therapy do?

We retrain function:
✔ Tongue posture (resting on the palate)
✔ Nasal breathing
✔ Lip seal
✔ Swallowing patterns

This is what creates long-term, stable results — not just a quick fix.

✨ Think of it this way:
Surgery creates the potential for movement
Therapy teaches the body how to use it

So why does this happen?

In many cases, it comes down to function:
• Low tongue posture (tongue resting at the bottom of the mouth)
• Mouth breathing instead of nasal breathing
• Lack of proper pressure from the tongue on the palate
• Early feeding or oral restrictions (like tongue tie)

The tongue is meant to rest on the roof of the mouth and gently guide the upper jaw to grow wider.

When that doesn’t happen →
the palate can develop narrow →
space becomes limited →
teeth appear crowded.

It’s not that there are “too many teeth” —
it’s often not enough space.

How can myofunctional therapy help?

Myofunctional therapy focuses on retraining the muscles of the face, tongue, and airway.

We work on:
• Correct tongue posture (resting on the palate)
• Nasal breathing
• Lip seal
• Proper swallowing patterns

This helps support better growth, better breathing, and better long-term stability — often alongside orthodontic or airway care when needed.

The earlier these patterns are identified,
the more we can support healthy development.

I’d start here:

1. Airway first
Can they breathe through their nose?
If not — why: allergies, tonsils/adenoids, congestion.
👉 You can’t train function on a blocked system.

2. Rest posture (this is everything)
Lips together. Tongue on the palate. Quiet nasal breathing.
Open mouth at rest = a pattern, not a habit.

3. Sleep tells the truth
Snoring. Open mouth. Restless sleep. Grinding.
👉 The body is trying to maintain the airway.

4. Tongue function
The tongue shapes the face.
Low/restricted = less support for the palate → compensation patterns.

5. Check for tongue-tie
Often missed.
Can affect breathing, speech, posture, sleep.

6. Train the function
Myo + speech therapy retrains:
breathing, tongue posture, lip seal, swallow
👉 Small habits = long-term growth.

7. Speech matters
Speech reflects function.
Articulation, coordination, breathing — all connected.

8. Build the right team
ENT • Orthodontist • Myofunctional therapist

9. Rethink grinding
Not just teeth.
👉 Often a response to airway + stability needs.

🔥 It’s not about “fixing habits.”
It’s about how your child breathes, sleeps & grows.

👉 If you’ve noticed any of these signs, it’s worth looking a little deeper

Feeding challenges can show up in subtle ways. Frequent gagging, limited food variety, difficulty chewing, or avoiding certain textures may be signs of underlying oral function concerns.

These patterns are not always “just a phase.” Early support can help children build the skills they need for safe, comfortable eating.

Seasonal allergies can make it harder to breathe through the nose, especially for children. When nasal passages are blocked, mouth breathing often becomes the default, which can affect sleep, facial development, and oral health.

Supporting nasal breathing during allergy season is key. Simple awareness and early intervention can help prevent long-term patterns from forming.
