As the weather warms and legging-up season begins, it can be tempting to pick up right where we left off. A gentle reminder that our horses’ bodies don’t bounce back overnight—especially those coming off recent injuries or extended time off.
Proper reintroduction to work is essential for rebuilding muscle, strengthening tendons, supporting healthy joints, and developing cardiac and lung capacity. Fitness should be developed gradually with a thoughtful program that allows bones and soft tissues—as well as the cardiovascular system—to adapt to increased demand. Rushing the process can undo months of progress and put your horse at risk for setbacks.
Take the time to start with correct foundational work, consistent warm-ups, and appropriate rest days. Your horse’s long-term soundness is built in these early weeks.
