These were our numbers from July - we are now over 60 ramps installed or built along our Mississippi Gulf Coast and throughout the state with the help of Cornelius Blakely & Hattiesburg Medical Supply, Stuart Marsalis. Currently we are working with BSL Construction, LLC to help build locally our larger ramps. When affordable, we utilize Hattiesburg Medical Supply with reusable materials or donated metal ramps. Metal ramps typically cost twice as much...so we reserve those for transition and smaller ramps.
We started our journey celebrating and supporting caregivers, and then transitioned into wheelchair ramps when we learned of so many caregivers & family members they take care of stuck in their homes with no safe way in or out.
Its a complex challenge that touches so many lives. Not only is it about the family caregiver, but our community caregivers. It is about the 1st Responders who get called out sometimes nonstop to get people to the doctors or ER - and we have had 1st Responders who have fallen through ramps!
It is also about people not going to their doctor appointments because they have no way out of their home...and then at some point it turns into an emergency and they have to call 911 to get to the ER. This could have been avoided with a functioning wheelchair ramp.
Most importantly it is about the caregiver and the patient, their physical and mental health. It is about their safety, their ability to get outside and living their life, their ability to get to their doctor appointments to keep them healthy...and so much more!!
We are still blown away by the generosity of Your Barefoot Neighbor with his Birthday Fundraiser we would part of, the generosity of Amanda Griggs & Jeremy Dunaway who stepped up to get us a trailer to help get our ramp modules to the upcoming builds quicker & safer, Keesler Federal Credit Union who has stepped up this year to be a Title Sponsor.
