CLEAR DIRECTION PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES, PLLC

Hello, my name is Dr. Elizabeth J. Smyth and I am a licensed clinical psychologist in the states of New York and Texas. I am the founder of Clear Direction Psychological Services PLLC. I obtained my Master’s in Educational Psychology in 2012 and then my Doctoral Degree in 2014 from Kean University’s Combined Clinical and School Psy.D. I have been providing mental health services in New York, New Jersey and Texas areas since I began my training in 2009. I have experience working with people from all different backgrounds. This includes evaluating and treating children, adults, and couples who suffered from a wide range of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional issues. I have worked in various settings including inpatient psychiatric hospitals, the criminal justice system, a college university psychological center, schools, and a private psychological group practice. In 2020, I opened Clear Direction Psychological Services, a small, specialty practice located on Long Island, New York. I am a dedicated psychologist whose work is much more than "a job." Those who enter my practice are cared for like family; psychotherapy is my passion, craft, and life's work. I understands no two individuals are the same. I will work with you to understand the root cause of your struggles and address those issues with long-lasting strategies, helping you get closer to the life you have always wanted. Mental health is complex, I have found that it usually takes a series of these attempts before we entertain the scary idea of seeing a psychologist. However, it just may be that you are in the right place. Therapy is not a magical cure, but it is the best path I know to heal, grow, gain insight, and feel better. In the process of therapy, you will likely make sense of your past and begin to understand how it affects your present. Many find greater awareness of themselves, and therefore are better able to navigate relationships and challenges in their lives. I know – I have been there. Therapy is more than a chat, checklist review, self-improvement project, or the "solving" of you as a crossword puzzle. Therapy is a relationship between two people devoted to facing the deepest truths of our lives so we can be healed. Making that first appointment can be difficult and may even provoke anxiety, but I know of no better or more worthy investment than psychotherapy. I help my patients learn and heal from their past experiences, then focus their attention on the present by supporting them to take action by modifying unproductive thought patterns, managing their emotions, and replacing unhealthy habits with healthy and productive behaviors. I view psychotherapy as a collaborative process with an emphasis on a warm, compassionate, non-judgmental therapeutic relationship. I will support you in increasing your self-awareness and developing the skills needed to create positive changes in your life. I have the experience to help you achieve your goals, overcome struggles, and learn to live a life in line with your core values. I am an active psychologist whose work is aimed at providing growth, relief, and healing for those that enter my practice. My specialty and passion are providing effective, evidence-based, therapy for young adults, adults, and couples suffering from trauma, anger, depression, anxiety, grief/loss, life stress, pre-marital, couples and marital problems. I have extensive training and experience using the following approaches in therapy: cognitive- behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment-based treatments, emotion focused therapy, emotion-focused couples therapy with trauma survivors, integrative behavioral couple therapy, compassion-focused therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches. I look forward to getting to know you, understanding your unique challenges and meeting you exactly where you are at this time, on this day. My goal is to walk alongside you in this healing process and to help you navigate difficult times. I hope you will invest in yourself and reach out today! Sincerely,
Dr. Smyth
