A patient came to us after a serious hand injury that occurred while working in their backyard with a saw. Upon being admitted to the ER, patient was diagnosed with a IF P1 fracture, PIP dislocation, and central slip laceration. Same day patient had emergency surgery for wound irrigation and debridement, CRPP of proximal phalanx, and central slip repair.

After 2.5 months of dedicated hand therapy, the patient has made excellent progress and has significantly improved the range of motion in their index finger.

Cases like this highlight how timely surgical care and focused rehabilitation can make a meaningful difference in recovery.

Introducing our Phalangasaurus Dino Splint 🦖✋

This progressive flexion orthotic was fabricated for our patient to increase PIP flexion of their index finger☝️Our patient sustained a P1 fracture with CRIF and a central slip repair after a finger laceration. After removal of the pins, we were cleared by the doctor to progress PIP flexion to increase patient’s ability to pinch and grip ✊

Meet Your Therapist: Anthony Kiriakos MS, OTR/L, CHT

Anthony Kiriakos is a dedicated Occupational Therapist and Certified Hand Therapist with a passion for helping patients regain function and improve their quality of life. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences from Philadelphia University in 2015 and went on to complete a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy at Stony Brook University in 2019. Anthony developed a strong interest in hand therapy through his experience in orthotics and coursework, where he became fascinated by the complexity of the upper extremity. He is certified in the Graston Technique (GT), a patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) used to enhance recovery and mobility.

Beyond his professional expertise, Anthony enjoys staying active through exercise, working on cars, and traveling. As a team-oriented and highly motivated clinician, he is committed to guiding his patients on their journey to recovery with compassion and precision.

✨ Splint Fabrication Friday ✨

When a pediatric patient arrived after a 2nd metacarpal Salter Harris fracture 🦴, our goal was to protect the fracture but also make sure she can be independent and functional in the classroom 🏫 Per doctor’s orders, we fabricated a radial gutter orthotic to immobilize mcp of the index finger☝️ and wrist. We also had the patient practice holding and writing with a pen ✍️ to make sure she will be able to take notes at school 📝

✨ Splint Fabrication Friday ✨

Patient arrived status post right thumb first cmc pinning with an external pin for chronic first cmc subluxation. We customized our thumb spica to allow the patient to provide pin care without removing the splint while providing pin protection.
