Greenleaf Neurology, PLLC Alexandra Filippakis, D.O. is a first-generation Greek-American and native of Haverhill, Massachusetts. Dr. Filippakis has been practicing medicine since 2014.

Small family business in Haverhill, MA offering exceptional care for people living with multiple sclerosis and other neurological conditions, as well as educational, consulting, clinical research, and public speaking services by Dr. Alexandra Filippakis. She is a graduate of University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine, where she is now a part-time Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurology. She is committed to teaching and mentoring the future generation of physicians. Dr. Filippakis completed her residency training in adult general neurology at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. She then went on to complete an additional fellowship in neuroimmunology/multiple sclerosis at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Her practice is focused on the comprehensive care of patients living with MS, but also includes some general neurology. From 2019-2025, she worked at Mass General Brigham Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where she established and directed Coastal Neurology’s Multiple Sclerosis Center, which was recognized by the National MS Society as a Center of Excellence. Dr. Filippakis has been interviewed many times by local and national newspapers, magazines, and television news outlets. In 2024, New Hampshire Magazine named her a Top Doctor. Dr. Filippakis is excited to practice in her own community. You may see her at the Haverhill Public Library, the Buttonwoods Museum, or grabbing her favorite smoothie across the bridge. She enjoys singing, reading, writing, volunteering at the local Greek church, and exploring nature trails with her husband and son. Her academic interests include advanced imaging biomarkers in multiple sclerosis, medical ethics, and the history of neurology.

Many of you have asked me about the role of EBV infection in the pathogenesis of MS over the past few years. I’m sure you recall my blurb about EBV being a necessary cofactor in the development of MS — part of a perfect storm that includes multiple “hits” in both genetics and environment.

Hot off the JAMA Neurology press!

Question: What is the US burden of disorders affecting the nervous system?

Findings: This cross-sectional study of the Global Burden of Disease 2021 study data found that, among the US population of 332.7 million, disorders affecting nervous system health impacted 180.3 million US individuals and were the top cause of disability, with 16.6 million disability-adjusted life-years. Conditions with the greatest collective disability were stroke, Alzheimer disease and other dementias, diabetic neuropathy, and migraine.

Meaning: Given the high prevalence of disorders affecting the nervous system, the United States should prioritize efforts to combat these conditions with new prevention strategies, therapeutics, and focused rehabilitation.
