In The News ..... Seeing and Hearing is Believing

The University of North Dakota held a seminar after the reinstatement of their music therapy program highlighting the importance and real world applications of this creative arts modality. "People long have seen the value in music...but it wouldn’t be until the advent of modern brain imaging and neurochemistry in the early 2000’s that researchers actually could "see" how music activates pleasure circuits, lowers stress markers and influences immune function. And it was that evidence that finally persuaded the National Institutes of Health to take music seriously."

Since 2011, MusicWorks has had a local grantor support us who asks to remain anonymous. This year, this grantor provided us with over $10,000 to purchase instrumentation to directly benefit the children with challenges that MusicWorks serves. New instrumentation is key to continue to engage and adapt to client’s needs. Some of the new instruments we purchased were new Casio Privia keyboards, tubano drums, otamatones and foot tambourines.

WE are truly thankful, grateful and blessed!

Jingle bells are an exciting and versatile instrument that can be used throughout the year, though they are especially popular during the holiday season. You can usually find them mounted on a Velcro strap and they can be worn in a variety of ways, such as around the wrists, ankles, or palms, making them accessible for clients of all ages and abilities. Their lightweight design allows individuals with limited grip strength or motor challenges to participate in music-making. In a music therapy session, jingle bells can be used to address a wide range of therapeutic goals. They support both fine and gross motor skills through rhythmic shaking, tapping, or movement-based activities. These small but prominent instruments can also be incorporated into exercises for timing, coordination, and bilateral movement. Jingle bells can encourage social interaction through group music making and turn taking. Jingle bells are one of the only tools used by music therapists that not only address therapeutic goals, but can spread some holiday cheer!

Jack is MusicWorks Rising Star for November! He attends group music therapy sessions both at his day program at Divine Providence Fatima and at his home. Jack participates in music therapy by singing to all the songs, shaking maracas, tapping Boomwhacker tubes and cheering on his peer’s during music making activities. Jack has a varied taste in music and loves to recall the singer, group and year that each song was recorded while singing and playing instruments along with the tunes. Jack also likes to assist with cleaning up after the session along with his peers. Recently, Jack has tried new things like strumming the ukulele in sessions. Jack’s bright smile, abundant energy and enthusiasm brings joy to our music therapy sessions. We are so happy and “thankful” to have Jack as a contributor to our MusicWorks music therapy groups.
