Become an Angel Donor today! This holiday season, give back to your community by donating to Richstone Family Center. For over 50 years, RFC has remained dedicated to preventing and treating child abuse.

Through our after school program, clinical support, parenting classes, and more, RFC has helped countless families in the Hawthorne and Greater Los Angeles communities. All of this is made possible because of support from donors. We could not do it without people who believe in what we do.

As 2025 comes to a close, we would like to show our gratitude to all of the volunteers who have been a part of our community this year. We could not do what we do without the dedication of our amazing volunteers. Today we’re highlighting Zoe, who leads our Kids Club South Bay Food Initiative Program!

Zoe is the president of the South Bay Food Initiative Club at Mira Costa High School, where she is a senior. The South Bay Food Initiative is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting hunger and food insecurity in the South Bay. We are so lucky to have Zoe in our community, teaching healthy habits to our Kids Club students and getting them excited about nutrition. Learn more about why she loves Richstone and SBFI!

“In my presidency, I wanted to expand our club to not only collect and redistribute food, but add an education component. So, at RFC, we lead monthly presentations relating to different nutrition topics[...] Recently, we have just launched our 2026 project at RFC which is to plant a garden with the kids!.”

“The kids are always hilarious and adorable so it’s definitely the people that keep coming back.”

“My favorite memory at the Richstone community was probably the first SBFI meeting I launched at the end of the summer in 2024. It was my first time exposing these kids to my work and seeing how genuinely interested they were was really touching. I anticipate our planting day becoming one of my favorite memories and I look forward to helping these kids get their hands dirty and learn!”

This weekend, we had breakfast with Santa! 🧑‍🎄 With the help of our amazing Richstone Family Center staff and volunteers, we hosted our annual holiday party. 🎄🎁

Families participated in activities such as Santa hat decorating, snowflake making, writing letters to Santa, cookie frosting, and more. 🍪 Children took photos with Santa and received generously donated stuffed animals and candy canes. 🧸Everyone enjoyed a delicious breakfast and enjoyed festive holiday music! 🎶

Our holiday celebration is always a fun way to gather in the spirit of the season. This year, we were supported by volunteers from the NCL Manhattan & Hermosa, Pier, and Palos Verdes Chapters, who led our various crafts and activities. ♥️🎨

Families could also take home clothes from our Donation Station so that they could go into the new year with style. 🧥👗

As 2025 comes to a close, we would like to show our gratitude to all of the volunteers who have been a part of our community this year. We could not do what we do without the dedication of our amazing volunteers. Today we’re highlighting our beloved volunteer, Rachel, who leads the Kids Club Fashion Club.

Rachel is a student at Mira Costa High School and has been volunteering at Richstone for over a year. She founded the Kids Club Fashion Club to bring her love for fashion and self-expression to our students. Her favorite part of Fashion Club is watching students’ uniqueness and confidence blossom. Thank you Rachel!

Learn more about Rachel’s time with RFC and why she loves leading Fashion Club.

“I started out by volunteering every Friday [...] getting to know the kids, immersing myself in the community, and helping out with homework. I had started a fashion club at school to explore how fashion can empower youth to explore their individuality. [...]I wanted to find a way to share this mission of empowerment and my passion for fashion with the kids. That’s how the Fashion Club was born!

Now that we’re in our third session, I can confidently say that it’s the community that has kept me coming back. I’ve developed amazing relationships with the kids and they never fail to make me laugh by filling me in on their latest drama or bringing up my mood by giving me a hug and sharing how excited they are to explore new styles and designs in Fashion Club!”

“One of my favorite memories of the Richstone community is definitely the fashion show we did at the end of last school year. Seeing how the kids were able to develop the confidence to strut the runway, show off the uniqueness of their designs, and foster an encouraging community that applauded each others’ individuality was so impressive.”

As 2025 comes to a close, we would like to show our gratitude to all of the volunteers who have been a part of our community this year. We could not do what we do without the dedication of our amazing volunteers.

Theresa Dawson and Cheryl Shojinaga founded the Partners in Philanthropy program in 2014 as a way to build a space for families to connect with one another and give back in service of others. Theresa and Cheryl began volunteering through NCL with their daughters and have continued to stay connected to RFC.

During PIP, representatives from philanthropy organizations lead an activity or project that supports their work. Families have assembled hygiene kits for the unhoused, made blankets for children in need, written letters to overseas soldiers, and more. Past community partners have included Pediatric Therapy Network, Any Soldier, Children’s Dental Health Clinic, and many others.

For more than a decade, this program has brought families together through service and empowered them to make a difference in their communities. Thank you to Theresa and Cheryl for creating this special program and for your continued support of RFC!

Learn more about why Theresa and Cheryl created PIP, why they continue their work, and their favorite memories.

“In alignment with the Richstone mission of strengthening and educating families, we wanted to create an opportunity for families to come together, learn about community needs, and contribute in a meaningful way.” – Theresa

“Seeing the families build relationships keeps me coming back. I hope I can make a difference in their lives through helping them give back to their community.” – Cheryl

“One of my favorite memories was when the Community Director from the Lawndale Library visited to share all the programs and resources the library offers. Several families went to get their first library cards. It was such a simple but powerful reminder of how exposure and education can open doors for families.” – Theresa

“My favorite memories are watching different families teach one another and provide support during the projects! It is so rewarding to see them help their peers and be leaders in their own right.” — Cheryl

OUR HISTORY

The Richstone Family Center was incorporated as a non-profit social services agency in 1974. In 1977, the State of California awarded Richstone a grant as one of the first of 6 child abuse treatment and prevention programs in the state. With this grant Richstone Center was established as a comprehensive agency providing services to approximately 70 families a year. In 1980, Richstone was recognized as a neighborhood family center by ICAN (Los Angeles County Inter-agency Council on Child Abuse and Neglect). Since that time, Richstone has expanded its staff from six to more than 135, increased the number of programs offered; expanded the area of service from Hawthorne to include the southwest corner of Los Angeles County and the Greater South Bay; increased the number of sites offering services to include six school districts, opened a Transitional Living facility and a satellite office in Torrance. Richstone offers services for children from birth to 18 and for parents in their teens to grandparents in their sixties. Throughout this period of rapid growth, Richstone invested 83%-90% of all revenue to directly serve the highest need communities.
