Day 7 & 8
From Punakha to Paro
Amankora Bumdrak Trek
When we began our climb at Sang Choekor Buddhist College (2,800m), I had no idea what these two days would do to me.
An early morning drive brought us to the trailhead, where the journey began alongside the Aman ponies. The first stretch was a steady climb—steep at times, but softened by the cool shade of the forest. As we gained elevation, we reached a clearing adorned with prayer flags, opening up to breathtaking views over the Paro and Do Chhu valleys.
The trail carried us higher toward Chhoe Chhoe Tse Lhakhang, quietly nestled into the mountainside. After a final push uphill, the reward was immense—panoramic views stretching from Paro Airport below to the snow-capped Himalayas above. From there, a short but magical climb through ancient ruins and fluttering prayer flags led us into a sacred, high-altitude meadow dotted with chortens.
That night, I stayed beneath Bumdrak Monastery—“the cave of a thousand prayers”—surrounded by stillness, mountains, and a sky that felt within reach. We visited the monastery and climbed close to 4,000m, soaking in views that felt almost unreal.
The next morning began with a sunrise that transfixed me.
Then came the descent—winding through pine and rhododendron forests along ancient monk trails. As we dropped lower, golden temple roofs began to appear through the trees. One of the most powerful moments came at Sangtopelri, where I faced my fear of heights and looked straight down at Tiger’s Nest, clinging to the cliffside below.
Not long after, we stood at its gates.
Crossing the gorge, descending to a waterfall, and climbing back up into the monastery itself was both humbling and exhilarating. On the way down, I paused, turned back, and took it all in—grateful, proud, and deeply present.
We ended the journey with a visit to Drukgyel Dzong, a stunning fortress built in 1644, standing as a quiet reminder of Bhutan’s strength and history.
A trek that challenged me, grounded me, and reminded me why I seek these journeys in the first place.
