12-6-26: Diagnosing bilateral papilledema in a French Bull dog today. Early this morning a prior staff member called stating her 5 year old Josey had suddenly lost significant vision over 24 hrs. Bumping into things. Couldn't retreive her treats. Couldn't look "Mom" in the eyes per usual. I said, bring her in. Iop's were 17, 15. Rx near plano. Pupils fully dilated (I have no idea if that is normal or not). Though canines optic nerves have a different look (Google it), a BIO examination revealed bilateral papilledema with bilateral inferior retinal sheen from the canine's tapedum (normal physiology = assists in nighttime vision)..
Off to the veterinary eye doc. Had to go to Chesapeake. Confirmation. Hopefully only benign intracranial hypertension, but that does not usually cause such sudden and significant sight loss.Treatment. Steroids. Acetazolamide.....
Hopeful outcomes. MRI in near future fir a priper diagnosis.
Proud of my old tech for calling me. She saved her Frenchies vision n life... Happy I could help.
At dinner last night we said additional prayers for intercession to St. Francis (a Catholic thing!).
Oh, how we love our pets. (Dogs rule!, as my 16 year old Fletcher lab-mutt-rescue, has joined me in my office for nearly a decade). Go kiss your dog, cat, horse, turtle, gold fish... then have a great day!

Do NOT bring them to me for eye evaluations!
