Matei Predescu is a Romanian-American pianist, keyboardist, composer, and improviser whose omnivorous musical pursuits range from their modern jazz and creative music project “Fictions/Ficțiuni” to experimental noise and electronic ambient projects.

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Matei’s original music explores themes of cultural memory, generational trauma, and Romanian American identity through the intersection of Black American music, Eastern European folk music traditions, and experimental music.

Matei studied jazz piano and improvised music at Oberlin Conservatory with Dan Wall and Dana Jessen, and received tutelage from luminary musicians like Billy Hart, Gary Bartz, Eddie Henderson, as well as interdisciplinary mentorship from mixed media artist Johnny Coleman. Matei’s work is also deeply rooted in interdisciplinary collaboration with filmmakers and visual artists, including forays into film scoring and improvised dance accompaniment.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL NOISE tells the inspiring story of Petru Cotarcea, a British-Romanian virtuoso violinist and entrepreneur. The documentary chronicles his ambitious effort to transform a retired double-decker bus into a mobile music school, driven by the vision of making music education free and accessible to every child in London.

Filmed entirely during the challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, this documentary serves as a powerful testament to the perseverance and dedication of artists and musicians in their pursuit of positive social change. Award-winning filmmakers Joe Pavlo and David Schendel capture the children's infectious joy of music and the significant hurdles faced in keeping the mobile school operating against all odds. This moving narrative is suitable for audiences of all ages, including children and parents.

About Petru Cotarcea
Born in Bucharest, Romania, Petru Cotarcea began his violin studies at the age of five. His distinguished musical education includes the George Enescu College of Music in Bucharest, Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, and the Royal Academy of Music in London.

In 2017, Cotarcea founded Lycaeum Music, a music teaching company that has provided instruction to over 9,000 children in London to date. The refurbished double-decker bus, a centerpiece of this endeavor, delivers music lessons to communities across the city. Recognizing his significant contributions to both the arts and social enterprise, Cotarcea was honored by Forbes magazine on their '30 Under 30' Europe list for Social Impact.
