How Chiropractic Care May Improve Your Stress Level

Frequent stress is just as bad for your physical health as it is for your mental health. Chronic stress increases your risk for high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, depression and other serious health conditions. Chiropractic care offers a natural way to manage stress.

The Effects of Stress

Do your neck and shoulder muscles feel sore and tight when you're stressed? Muscle tension isn't the only physical consequence of stress. Stress can also cause headaches and migraines, back pain, nausea, diarrhea, bloating, sleep issues, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ).

These symptoms occur when your body activates the "fight-or-flight" response. The response helps you react to a threatening situation, but also occurs if you're feeling stressed about a work situation or an argument with your partner. In addition to tensing your muscles, the fight-or-flight response raises your blood pressure and heart rate, slows digestion, and increases production of the stress hormone cortisol.

Less Stress with Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic treatments focus on improving musculoskeletal (bones and muscles) health and nervous system function. Small bones called vertebrae provide flexibility for the spine and protect the spinal cord, the connection between the brain and body. A network of nerves branches out from the spinal cord along the length of the spine.

Misaligned vertebrae (subluxations) and tight muscles and tissues press on nerves, irritating them. Irritation and pressure make it harder for the nervous system to do its job and may be contributing factors in stress.

Chiropractic adjustments realign the vertebrae, relieving pain and irritation. Spinal manipulation also balances the nervous system, according to a literature search published in Acta Biomedica in 2020.

Chiropractic treatment offers many stress-relieving benefits, including:

More Comfortable Muscles and Tissues. Adjustments correct subluxations and decrease stress on surrounding tissues. Massage and other soft tissue therapies loosen tight muscles and tissues, helping you feel more relaxed. As muscle tension eases, you may find your range of motion and overall comfort level increase. Do you struggle with migraines and tension headaches due to stress? These types of headaches are associated with tense neck muscles, according to the American Chiropractic Association. Adjustments to the vertebrae in your neck, in addition to massage, soft tissue mobilization, trigger point therapy, and other treatments, could relieve or reduce your stress-induced headaches.
Cortisol Reduction. Cortisol gives your body the energy it needs to handle difficult situations by increasing glucose (sugar) levels in the blood. Unfortunately, cortisol doesn't always drop after a stressful experience. If you often feel stressed, your cortisol level may remain high. Chiropractic treatments improve nervous system function, which could help your cortisol level return to normal. Treatments also eliminate nerve signal disruptions that could affect your ability to calm yourself.
Better Heart Rate Variability. Your high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) becomes lower when you feel stressed. Heart rate variability is the time between heartbeats. Massage increases HF-HRV while improving relaxation, according to a randomized, controlled trial published in Scientific Reports in 2020.
A Natural Calm. Do you wish there were a way to feel calmer without taking medication? During many chiropractic treatments, including adjustments and massage, your body releases serotonin and endorphins. These hormones relieve pain and improve mood naturally, helping you feel calm and relaxed.
Better Sleep. Stress worsens when you don't get a good night's sleep, yet it's hard to fall asleep when your muscles hurt, you have a headache, and you're worried about the day ahead. Chiropractic treatments promote good sleep by relieving pain and enhancing relaxation.

Are you concerned about your stress level? Chiropractic care offers an effective natural solution to stress. Contact our office to schedule an appointment with the chiropractor.

The Benefits of Chiropractic Care for All Ages

Chiropractic care provides important benefits at every stage of life. Whether you're dealing with a colicky baby, an aching back, or arthritis, chiropractic treatments are aimed at easing pain, improving comfort, and supporting wellness.

Chiropractic Care for Infants, Children, and Teens

The birthing process may disrupt the alignment of the spine and stress your baby's nervous system. Chiropractic treatments adjust the spine and calm the nervous system. Treatments can start soon after birth. Chiropractors use special, gentle techniques when working with infants and young children.

Looking for a solution to colic? Babies with colic are inconsolable and cry for hours every day, no matter what you do to try to soothe them. Luckily, chiropractic treatment could calm your colicky baby. Chiropractic treatment resulted in fewer daily hours of crying in five out of six colic research studies examined by Clinical Pediatrics in 2024.

Heavy backpacks worn by children and teens can cause subluxations (spinal misalignments), in addition to changes in posture and gait. According to a 2021 Open Sports Sciences Journal review article, carrying a heavy backpack can change the curvature of the spine, compress the rubbery disks between the vertebrae, and cause low back pain in adulthood.

Your chiropractor can adjust your child's spine to correct subluxations that cause pain and stiffness. Other helpful chiropractic treatments, like massage and ultrasound therapy, soothe and relax sore, tight muscles, and tissues.

Improving Comfort with Chiropractic Care During Adulthood

Sitting at a desk, commuting, lifting heavy objects, and performing repetitive movements can cause low back pain, one of the most common reasons people visit the chiropractic office. Chiropractic adjustments are among the back pain treatments recommended by the American College of Physicians and the World Health Organization.

Chiropractic care isn't just effective for back pain. Your chiropractor can help you manage many conditions and complaints, including:

Bulging Discs
Digestive Issues
Bursitis
Golf or Tennis Elbow
Scoliosis
Plantar Fasciitis
Sciatica
Neck, Hip, Knee and Shoulder Pain
Headaches and Migraines
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD)
Fibromyalgia
Muscle Spasms
Trigger Points

Do you experience neck pain, headaches, muscle spasms, or tingling and numbness in your arms and hands when using your smartphone, tablet, or other digital device? You may have text neck, a condition caused by the excessive pressure placed on the neck when looking down at a digital device. Chiropractic adjustments improve spinal alignment, while soft tissue treatments relax tight muscles and tissues in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Treating text neck is particularly important, as the condition may eventually damage the spine in some cases.

Chiropractic care can be helpful for athletes of all ages. Treatments improve joint mobility, muscle balance, and circulation, help athletes recover from injuries faster, and reduce the risk of injuries caused by stiff joints and muscles or poor posture or balance.

Chiropractic Treatment for Senior Citizens

Losing your balance can lead to a devastating fall if you're a senior citizen. More than 14 million older Americans fall every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Thirty-seven percent of the falls require medical treatment or activity restrictions. Chiropractic treatment improves your balance by relaxing stiff muscles that prevent full range of motion and correcting joint and spinal misalignments.

Age-related wear and tear on joints and connective tissues may lead to pain, stiffness, and range-of-motion issues. Luckily, chiropractic treatment can help you stay active and maintain your independence. It offers an effective way to manage the symptoms of arthritis, spinal stenosis, osteoporosis and other degenerative conditions.

It's never too early or too late to receive chiropractic care! Contact our office to schedule your appointment.

Which Disc Conditions Do Chiropractors Treat?

Do you suffer from back or neck pain caused by a disc condition? A visit to the chiropractor can relieve pain, numbness, tingling, and other symptoms. Chiropractors use a variety of therapies designed to improve your comfort and ease of movement.

What Do Spinal Discs Do?

Rubbery discs cushion the space between individual vertebrae in the spine. The discs behave like shock absorbers and give your spine the flexibility it needs to move, twist, and bend. Discs consist of a soft, gel-like interior encased in a tougher outer covering.

Discs may become damaged due to injuries, stress, or wear and tear. Unfortunately, wear and tear is hard to avoid and is a natural part of aging. As you get older, the flexibility and water content of your spinal discs decreases, resulting in a thinner disc more prone to damage.

No matter what the cause of your disc condition, chiropractic treatments reduce pain, improve mobility, and may even help you avoid surgery.

Spinal Conditions Chiropractors Treat

Your chiropractor offers effective treatments for these disc conditions:

Herniated Discs. A herniated disc happens when the outer layer of a spinal disc ruptures and the interior material pushes through that tear. The protruding section of the disc presses on nerves, causing pain, numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness. Disc herniations often affect the neck and lower back. Men between 20 and 50 are particularly at risk for herniated discs, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. Other risk factors include repetitive activities, being overweight, poor lifting technique, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, and driving for long periods.
Bulging Discs. Bulging discs happen when the disc's inner core pushes against the outer layer without breaking through it. The bulging section of the disc increases pressure on nerve roots, causing stiffness and pain.
Degenerative Disc Disease. Age-related wear and tear is the cause of degenerative disc disease. Thinning discs lose their ability to adequately cushion the spine and could be the reason your back or neck is stiff and painful. Degenerative disc disease can affect flexibility and range of motion. Pain may be worse in certain positions, such as sitting or bending. Disc degeneration may begin as early as 40, although you might not feel any pain at this stage, according to the Arthritis Foundation.
Disc-Related Sciatica. Sciatica happens due to inflammation and irritation of the sciatic nerve that travels from the lower back to the foot. Bulging or herniated discs press on the nerve, causing pain. Although the problem disc may be in your lower back, pain radiates along the nerve path to your buttock, leg, or foot.

Treating Disc Conditions with Chiropractic Care

Chiropractors use several treatments to relieve symptoms of disc conditions, including:

Spinal Adjustment. Spinal adjustments restore misaligned vertebrae to their natural position. Adjustments improve mobility, ease pressure on nerves, and help decrease nerve irritation. Quick movements, produced by pressure from the hands or a small activator, realign the vertebrae.
Soft Tissue Therapy. Soft tissue therapies, like massage and soft tissue mobilization, reduce stiffness, ease muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote healing.
Flexion-Distraction. Flexion-distraction therapy uses gravity to improve spinal alignment and reduce pain. Your chiropractor gently adjusts your spine while you lie on a moving segmented table. The therapy repositions the bulging or herniated disc portion of the disc, reduces pressure on nerves, and improves circulation and mobility.
Spinal Decompression Therapy. Spinal decompression gently stretches the spine, which creates negative pressure inside the disc. The pressure difference helps herniated and bulging discs return to their normal positions, boosts circulation, and improves the flow of healing nutrients to the spine.
Exercises. Your chiropractor may recommend exercises to strengthen and loosen the muscles supporting the spine. These exercises improve joint stability, flexibility, and mobility, while reducing muscle tension.
Lifestyle Recommendations. If your habits or lifestyle are factors in your disc condition, your chiropractor may recommend making a few lifestyle changes. For example, improving your posture and taking frequent breaks during road trips could decrease pain and stiffness.

Ease your pain and stiffness with chiropractic care. Contact our office to schedule an appointment with the chiropractor.

How to Choose the Best Chiropractor for Your Needs

Are you tempted to choose a name at random when searching for a chiropractor? Although that method may be quick, it won't guarantee you'll find a chiropractor who's best-suited to treat your condition. Before you make an appointment, follow these tips:

Read Referrals

About 70,000 chiropractors practice in the U.S., according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), which makes narrowing down your choices understandably difficult. Luckily, Google, Yelp, and other review sites offer valuable information regarding chiropractic offices.

Pay particular attention to reviews that mention your specific problem. If you're suffering from neck pain after a car accident, multiple reviews that mention successful whiplash treatment may mean that chiropractor is a good choice for you.

Consider the details if you notice any negative reviews. Complaints about the magazine or music selection in the waiting room obviously aren't as important as issues with the chiropractor's bedside manner or treatment results.

Ask your doctor or friends and family members for referrals. People you know can be good referral sources and may provide valuable information on a chiropractor's services, ease in making appointments, parking availability, and friendliness of the office staff.

If you need a little help finding a chiropractor, visit the "Find a Doctor" page on the ACA's website. Simply enter your zip code to retrieve a list of chiropractors in your area.

Take a Look at the Website's "About Us" Section

Most chiropractic websites provide information about the chiropractor's education and experience, in sections like "About Us" or "Meet the Team." Make sure a chiropractor you are considering graduated from an accredited chiropractic college and is licensed by your state's board of chiropractic examiners.

These sections may also mention particular areas of interest or special training or certifications. For example, a chiropractor may have furthered his or her education in sports medicine and passed a board exam offered by the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians.

Prioritize Accessibility

Before you make an appointment, consider these questions:

Does the chiropractor offer hours that fit your schedule?
How many days per week is the office open?
Can you reach the office using public transportation, if needed?
Is the office handicap accessible?
Does the chiropractor accept your insurance?

What Types of Treatments and Services Are Offered?

Chiropractors offer a variety of services, including:

Spinal Manipulation (Adjustments) to Realign Vertebrae
Soft Tissue Therapies to Ease Muscle Tension, Knots, and Spasms
Flexion-Distraction Therapy to Relieve Pressure on Discs and Nerves in the Spine
Ultrasound Therapy to Ease Pain and Promote Healing in Deep Tissues
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) to Relieve Pain with a Gentle Electrical Current

Spinal manipulation, one of the most common treatments chiropractors use, offers effective relief of back and neck pain, according to several research studies. In 2023, researchers published a comparison of the effectiveness of spinal manipulation and conservative therapy in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine. They concluded that chiropractic treatment seemed to be more effective than conservative care in reducing pain, increasing range of motion, and improving disability.

Are you experiencing pain due to arthritis, a sports injury, sciatica, herniated discs, or another painful condition? Check the website to ensure your chiropractor treats these issues. The chiropractor's website may include a section about the conditions treated, or you may need to call to determine if a particular chiropractor is experienced in treating your problem.

Visit the Office

Reviews, family referrals, and websites offer basic information, but there's no substitute for visiting the chiropractic office and meeting the chiropractor and staff. During your visit, pay attention to your surroundings. Is everything clean and comfortable? Does the office provide private exam and treatment rooms? Is the chiropractor willing to work with you to develop a treatment plan? Does the chiropractor clearly describe treatment options? Do you understand how much you'll pay for each visit? Are the chiropractor and staff friendly and empathetic?

Looking for a chiropractor who is responsive to your needs? We're here to help you manage your pain and improve your health. Contact our office to schedule an appointment.

Struggling with Posture Issues After an Auto Accident? Find Out How Chiropractic Care Can Help

A visit to the chiropractor is a must after an auto accident, even if you don't have significant injuries. The impact of a motor vehicle crash can disrupt your body's balance and cause posture issues. Without prompt treatment, you may develop chronic pain, stiffness, and flexibility issues due to poor posture. Fortunately, your chiropractor offers several treatments that will ease your pain and improve your posture.

What Happens to Your Posture After an Auto Accident

Strong forces act on your body when your car hits another car or collides with a wall, tree, or stationary object. According to a clinical review published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy in 2016, the forces can temporarily change the curvature of the spine immediately after impact.

These changes affect the tissues and structures of the back, neck, head, and shoulders and may damage soft tissues, like muscles and ligaments. Misalignment of the vertebrae in the spine may also occur. The vertebrae are a series of small bones that protect the spinal cord and permit easy movement of your back. Misalignments, also called "subluxations," can be painful and could cause stiffness, reduced range of motion, and poor posture.

After an auto accident, you may find it's more comfortable to change the way you walk or stand, or might notice that tilting your head reduces your neck pain. Although altering your posture may initially make you feel better, posture changes affect your body's natural balance. For example, tilting your neck may cause muscles on one side of your neck to tighten, while those on the other side become too weak. Placing more weight on one leg due to back or hip pain can also increase muscle tension and trigger pain.

Poor posture can lead to other issues, including:

Headaches
Jaw Pain
Trouble Breathing
Sluggish Circulation
Balance Problems
Sleep Issues

Poor posture could also cause problems with digestion, incontinence, or constipation, according to Harvard Health Publishing. Slouching increases pressure on the bladder and digestive system, causing inefficient functioning of these systems.

Signs of poor posture include:

Rounded Shoulders
Change in Head Position
Uneven Hips or Shoulders
Increased Curve in Neck or Lower Back
Leaning to One Side When Standing

How Your Chiropractor Treats Posture Issues After an Auto Accident

Your chiropractor will perform a thorough assessment that includes posture analysis and range of motion testing. Your visit may also include X-rays or other tests that help your chiropractor determine the extent of your injuries.

Based on your examination, your chiropractor may perform one or more of these treatments:

Spinal Manipulation. Spinal manipulation, the most well-known chiropractic treatment, realigns the vertebrae. Quick, painless pressure from the hands or a small device moves vertebrae back into place. Spinal manipulation eases pain, reduces pressure on nerves, improves mobility, and helps you maintain good posture. Manipulation also improves circulation, ensuring that healing nutrients in your blood reach injured tissues.
Soft Tissue Therapies. Massage, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, soft tissue mobilization, and other chiropractic treatments loosen tight tissues, break up scar tissue, ease muscle spasms, and improve circulation. Keeping tissues loose offers several benefits. Tight tissues press on nerves, triggering pain and limiting the range of motion in joints, making it difficult to maintain good posture.
Ultrasound Therapy. Ultrasound waves help deep tissues heal. The waves create a warming effect that improves blood flow and reduces pain, inflammation, and stiffness.
Exercises. During your visit, your chiropractor will teach you exercises that stretch and strengthen your muscles. Performing these exercises supports the effects of your treatment and helps you avoid posture issues.

Have you been in an auto accident recently? Chiropractic care can help you avoid lingering pain due to poor posture. Contact our office to schedule an appointment with the chiropractor.

Top Benefits of Combining Chiropractic Care and Physical Therapy

Looking for an effective solution for pain and stiffness? Combining chiropractic care with physical therapy could help you feel better faster.

How Chiropractic Care and Physical Therapy Treat Your Symptoms

Chiropractic care focuses on correctly aligning joints and vertebrae to improve joint flexibility and range of motion and relieve pressure on nerves. Physical therapy involves exercises and movements designed to enhance muscle flexibility, stability, and strength. Although these therapies use different techniques, both focus on relieving pain and stiffness.

The combination of these treatments offers several benefits:

Effective Pain Control. Spinal adjustments, a common chiropractic treatment, are extremely effective for easing pain. Chiropractors manipulate, or adjust, vertebrae in the spine and bones in joints to improve their alignment. Proper alignment relieves painful pressure on nerves and reduces stress on muscles and tissues. Physical therapy and stretching exercises continue the pain-relieving effects of chiropractic care by keeping muscles and tissues loose. Both treatments prompt the release of serotonin and endorphins, hormones that dull pain.
Drug-Free Relief. Relying on pain medication can cause issues ranging from nausea and dizziness to addiction. Combining chiropractic care with physical therapy could help you control pain and stiffness without medication or help you decrease your reliance on medication. According to a research study published in Health Services Research in 2018, participating in physical therapy before trying other treatments reduced the probability that patients would need an opioid prescription by 89%. Other studies have noted that chiropractic care also reduces the need for opioids.
Increased Range of Motion. A misaligned joint or vertebrae, or tight muscles and tissues, can reduce your range of motion. Range of motion refers to the full extent you can move a joint. For example, reduced range of motion in your shoulder may make it difficult to move your arm above your head. Correcting misalignments with chiropractic treatments ensure that joints move freely and easily. Physical therapy exercises and massage loosen tight tissues that cause joint restrictions and break up scar tissue that interferes with normal movement.
Quicker Results. Combining both treatments could mean you spend less time in pain. Chiropractic adjustments decrease joint stiffness and nerve irritation, providing quick relief of symptoms. Physical therapy continues the positive effects of chiropractic treatments by targeting tight or imbalanced muscles that could worsen pain. After chiropractic treatments, you may find it's easier to perform physical therapy exercises and stretches. The sooner you can work your muscles and tissues, the quicker you'll begin to see an improvement in your symptoms. If you try to exercise while your joints or spine are misaligned, you may irritate already-inflamed tissues and prolong your recovery.
Longer Lasting Relief. Physical therapy exercises and activities enhance chiropractic treatment results by strengthening the muscles that support and stabilize joints. If the muscles remain weak or imbalanced, you may be more likely to experience new issues with alignment even after a chiropractic adjustment. You're also less likely to injure yourself again if your spine and joints are properly aligned and your tissues are loose and flexible.

Relieve your pain with chiropractic care and physical therapy. Contact our office to schedule your appointment.
