Happy December 1st! When you are filled with stressful thoughts, breathing techniques can help you balance. Here are a few breathing techniques to get you started. Mindfulness breathing exercises are simple, evidence-based techniques to help reduce stress, anxiety, and improve focus by anchoring your attention to the present moment. At KRCC, we integrate these into our therapy and wellness programs to support mental health and recovery. Here are five specific exercises with step-by-step instructions—try one for 5-10 minutes daily:

1. Box Breathing (Square Breathing): This technique promotes calm by balancing your breath cycle. Sit comfortably, inhale through your nose for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, exhale through your mouth for 4 counts, then hold for 4 counts. Repeat 4-6 times. It's great for managing anxiety or before bed.

2. 4-7-8 Breathing: Designed to relax the nervous system, this is ideal for falling asleep or easing panic. Inhale quietly through your nose for 4 counts, hold your breath for 7 counts, then exhale through your mouth (making a whoosh sound) for 8 counts. Repeat up to 4 times.

3. Belly Breathing (Diaphragmatic Breathing): Focuses on deep abdominal breathing to reduce shallow chest breathing associated with stress. Place one hand on your belly, inhale through your nose so your belly rises (chest stays still), then exhale through your mouth, feeling your belly fall. Repeat for 5-10 breaths.

4. Pursed Lip Breathing: Helps slow down breathing and improve oxygen flow, useful for anxiety or shortness of breath. Inhale through your nose for 2 counts, then purse your lips (like whistling) and exhale slowly for 4 counts (twice as long as the inhale). Repeat 4-6 times.

5. Mindful Breathing with Awareness: A basic practice to cultivate presence. Sit or lie down, breathe normally, and notice the sensation of air entering and leaving your nostrils or belly rising/falling. If your mind wanders, gently return to your breath. Continue for 5 minutes.

These can be done anywhere, anytime. If you'd like personalized guidance, KRCC offers mindfulness in our outpatient therapy—call 1-800-262-7491 or visit krcccares.com. What's your favorite breathing technique? Share below! 🌿

- Reach out: Call a friend, join a local gathering, or connect online—small talks can spark big comfort.
- Nurture yourself: Cozy up with a favorite book, take a peaceful walk, or try a simple mindfulness breath to center your heart.
- Give back: Volunteer at a community event or food pantry; helping others often lifts your own spirits.
- Seek support: If the loneliness feels heavy, talk to someone who understands.

11/21/2025

Here’s your healing practice for the weekend, mindfulness! Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment, without judgment, to reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance overall well-being. It's accessible to anyone and can be used in daily life through simple techniques.

Here are some effective ones to explore, starting with beginners in mind:

1. Deep Breathing: Sit comfortably and inhale through your nose for a count of 4, hold for 1 second, then exhale through your mouth for a count of 5. This helps calm the mind and reduce anxiety.

2. Body Scan: Lie down or sit, and mentally scan your body from toes to head, noticing any tension and releasing it with each breath. It's great for relaxation and awareness.

3. Mindful Eating: Choose a small snack and eat it slowly, savoring the texture, taste, and smell without distractions. This fosters gratitude and presence.

4. Mindful Walking: Take a stroll, focusing on each step, the feel of the ground, and your surroundings. It's an easy way to combine movement with mindfulness.

5. Counting Exercise: Inhale and exhale while counting backward from 10, or count objects around you. This grounds you in the present and interrupts racing thoughts.

6. Guided Imagery: Close your eyes and visualize a peaceful scene, like a beach or forest, engaging all senses. It promotes relaxation and stress relief.

7. Mindful Coloring or Drawing: Grab a coloring book or doodle freely, focusing on the colors and strokes. It's creative and calming, especially for beginners.

Start with 5-10 minutes a day, and build from there. If mindfulness feels overwhelming, consider apps like Calm or guided sessions. Consistency is key—try one technique today and see how it shifts your day!

At KRCC, we use these in our outpatient therapy and wellness centers to help you build resilience—whether through group sessions or personalized plans.

For fifty years, our light has burned brightly, and we’ve taken the hands of countless people in the darkest of times and given them the hope and help they’ve needed. Things can get better. You can get well. We care about you, and the story of your life is important to us. Now, it’s time for you to care about you. Recovery happens, and it starts at KRCC.
