Adhesive capsulitis, also known as frozen shoulder, is a condition in which inflammation causes the shoulder joint to become painful and stiff. Symptoms vary based on the “stage of freezing” but typically involve dull and aching pain that gets worse with shoulder movement.
As frozen shoulder progresses over time, a person may experience decreased shoulder pain but continued limitations with range of motion. The final stage involves a “thawing” of the frozen shoulder, with gradual returns of strength and shoulder range. Frozen shoulder often improves without surgery, and physical therapy plays a large role in restoring movement.
Physical therapists are skilled at measuring deficits and tracking progress; they will be able to instruct you on stretches and strengthening exercises to increase shoulder function.
