Feathered Pipe

Feathered Pipe ~ America's finest health, wellness and yoga retreats and travel ~ Carlos Nakai – to name only a few – are honored alumni of the Feathered Pipe.

The Feathered Pipe Ranch is one of the country’s premier yoga and conscious living retreat centers. Tucked in the heart of the Montana Rockies and surrounded by miles of forested mountains, it is a vibrant and peaceful oasis to which our guests return eagerly year after year – inevitably leaving the Ranch feeling recharged and relaxed – and counting the days until they can again return. The Ranch has been home to yoga and meditation retreats and a host of other personal growth programs since 1975, helping people experience our wholeness and remember our intimate connection to all of life. Many of today’s foremost voices on yoga, meditation, wellness and health have come through our doors at one time or another, with many of them getting their start as a student through our scholarship fund. Joseph Campbell, Dr. Andrew Weil, Lilias Folan, Angela Farmer, Rodney Yee, Patricia Walden, Erich Schiffmann, Judith Hanson Lasater, Seane Corn, and world-renowned Native American flutists, R. The Ranch is nestled amidst almost a million acres of national forestland and offers an ideal setting for true retreat experience, allowing the space within and without to experience the essence of one’s self and nature. Visitors can wander alone exploring ambling brooks fed by pure mountain springs and discover open vistas to view the world below and the Big Sky above. Ranch retreat visitors can just as easily find community with others, sitting on the open lawn in the shade of cottonwood trees, quaking aspens, and fragrant pine with an exquisite view out over the lake with Lake Tipi and mountain woodlands reflected. Horseback riding is available for those wishing to view the world from a truly Montanan point of view.

"So when we talk about sisterhood, at least in the spiritual path, how I see it is that it’s something that also takes courage.

It takes a kind of bravery to be with other women as they go through their own challenges, and deciding and feeling that it is possible to be open and to be in the space of healing together and in the space of researching together."

Tricycle contributor Erica Bassani discusses her new book, Women in Love with the Divine.

"But when we prioritize our vertical alignment—our connection to the River of Light, our I Am presence—we root ourselves in clarity, truth, and peace.

Through meditation, affirmations, and intentional awareness, we learn to navigate life’s inevitable tugs without losing ourselves to them, staying anchored in our highest self."

The root cause of excessive tension often lies in our inability to manage our thoughts. Rather than guiding the mind, we let it control us.

"We need to understand that the ‘normal’ mind—the mind when there’s nothing interfering with it, when it’s without the nivaranas (the hindrances), without the kilesas (the defilements)—is ‘luminous.’ At such times, it could be called the ‘original mind,’ as it was in the womb.

The luminous, original mind still thinks and feels, too, but without the defilements. It’s naturally clean and unblemished and can think and feel in the way that is natural to it."

"One of the teachings shared by many contemporary traditions is the reminder that the body already knows what it needs. Not in a mystical, all-seeing way, but in the deeply biological sense: muscles, fascia, nerves, and breath respond to curiosity far more readily than to force. Ask someone to 'drop into sensation' and they will likely find something profound, often accidentally. Ask them to 'achieve a pose' and you’ll mostly see people argue with their hamstrings.

Curiosity, it turns out, is the most reliable lineage there is"

Across traditions, styles, and philosophies, movement has always been one of humanity’s first teachers. Curiosity, it turns out, is the most reliable lineage there is.

A Light Exists in Spring
by Emily Dickinson

A Light exists in Spring
Not present on the Year
At any other period —
When March is scarcely here

A Color stands abroad
On Solitary Fields
That Science cannot overtake
But Human Nature feels.

It waits upon the Lawn,
It shows the furthest Tree
Upon the furthest Slope you know
It almost speaks to you.

Then as Horizons step
Or Noons report away
Without the Formula of sound
It passes and we stay —

A quality of loss
Affecting our Content
As Trade had suddenly encroached
Upon a Sacrament.

"Being able to slow down physiologically when one is operating at a higher register might bring a degree of deliberateness to 'fast-paced' endeavors. It can help us embody the tortoise despite the prevalence of so many hares."

Experts of many varieties seem to agree: we’re moving way too fast, and we need to slow down—not just for our relaxation, but for our survival. Can a personal mindfulness practice have any meaningful effect on our individual and collective addiction to constant motion?
