I am thankful that I "get" to teach CPR and First Aid Courses through the American Heart Association (AHA). The AHA has a campaign called "Life is why!" They encourage us to share our personal story to help students engage and catch our passion, and in my case, why I still teach after 18 years!
Years ago, my nephew Gabe sustained a traumatic head injury that, ultimately, led to his heart stopping. My brother-in-law Shane had to do CPR on his son. They arrived to a locate clinic in Brazil whose physicians quickly realized his injuries were beyond their scope and decided on transporting him to a larger hospital in Porto Alegre which specialized in Gabe's injuries.
A neurosurgeon performed the delicate surgery on my nephew. Ten days later, he awakened from his medically-induced coma and asked his parents, "May I eat my chocolate dinosaur and when can I go home?" Amazing, right?! The best is yet to come.....
This young man is now in his 20's and has NO neurological deficit! I truly believe it is due to the quick actions of high quality CPR by his father, the expertise of the clinic and the neurosurgeon.
Take a look at the pictures below. You'll see Shane and my nephew, Gabe.....along with a TBT picture, one with my sister, Erin and one with his sister Cami. I thank God for all the pieces put into place that kept our Gabe alive. I thank God for all the experiences we have had since his accident and recovery.
Now you know, Gabriel Latham......He is my passion. He is my "Life is Why!"
If you, your company or school are interested in classes, let me know!
