Researchers have found that exposing the body to cold in certain areas such as under the arms can trigger rapid relaxation. This works by stimulating the vagus nerve, a key component of the parasympathetic nervous system that helps regulate heart rate, breathing, and stress hormones.
When activated by cold, the vagus nerve signals the body to slow down, creating a calming effect within moments. This method has shown promise in managing anxiety, panic attacks, or sudden emotional stress, offering a quick, drug-free way to regain control over the body’s stress response.
Psychologists increasingly recommend cold therapy techniques, such as ice packs, cold water splashes on the face, or brief cold showers, as practical tools for grounding and emotional regulation. These findings highlight how understanding the body’s own biology can provide powerful, immediate relief from stress.
