Gary Dean Heskett, a man renowned for his warmth and kindness, passed away peacefully at his home in Hemingway, South Carolina, on November 7, 2025, at the age of 83. He was a beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend who touched the lives of many with his amiable nature and ever-present smile.

Born on August 1, 1942, in Bethesda, Ohio, Gary was the cherished son of Lowell and Esther Marmie Heskett, who predeceased him. He spent his youth in Ohio, where the foundations of his strong character and work ethic were laid.

Throughout his life, Gary was the epitome of a hard worker, ranging from a heavy equipment operator in the Coal Mine Industry to owning a construction company and later working in the meat department in the local grocery store. His diligence and commitment to his profession were matched only by his involvement in the community, where he was a member of the Williams Hill Free Will Baptist Church.

His faith was a cornerstone of his existence, and while he was able, Gary found joy in going to church. He often engaged in discussions about faith and matters of the spirit with his nephew, Robert, who held a special place in Gary's heart. His love for his family was as deep as his love for the Lord, and he took great pleasure in spending quality time with them. Gary's jovial nature meant that he was always ready with a joke, a laugh, and good company.

Beyond his religious dedication, Gary had simple pleasures that filled his life with happiness. He loved a good meal, reveling in the flavors and the fellowship that came with dining. With Barbara, his beloved wife, by his side, Gary joyfully adopted the role of her steadfast shopping companion.

Survived by his wife, Barbara Allen Collins Cook, and sister, Karen Flaherty, Gary's legacy of love and laughter continues to live on. He also leaves behind a special niece who he loved as a daughter, Bambi Miller and her husband, Andy, and his great nephews, Robert and Blake Miller, each of whom brought immense joy to his life.

Gary Dean Heskett was the kind of man who enriched the lives of all who knew him. Described as kind, friendly, and thoughtful, he will be deeply missed and forever cherished.

Gary’s Homegoing service will be held at Young Funeral Home, 210 East George Street, Hemingway, SC 29554 on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at 3:15 pm. Officiating will be Rev. Doug Mathis and Rev. Scott Stone. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Young Funeral Home.

Denise Miller Floyd left this world to be with her Lord on October 25, 2025, at her home in Hemingway, South Carolina. Born on December 20, 1964, Denise led a life anchored by faith, family, and education, touching the lives of everyone she encountered with her intelligence and warm spirit.

Denise's journey began as an honor graduate of Pleasant Hill High School in 1983, where she was crowned Miss Pleasant Hill High School in 1982. She continued to excel academically, earning both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of South Carolina at Coastal. Her passion for knowledge and dedication to shaping young minds were evident during her impressive 33-year tenure as a Business Education teacher at Johnsonville High School, where she proudly retired from the very classroom in which she began.

In her personal life, Denise's heart belonged to her family. She was a devoted wife of 39 years to her husband, Lee Floyd, and a nurturing mother to her children, Trey Legrand Floyd (Carsen), Everette "Rhett" Floyd (Grace), and Abigail "Abi" Floyd. Her role as Ema to her grandchildren, Easton Gray Cagle, Isaac Tate Floyd, and Lila-Ellen Everlee Floyd, was one she cherished above all. Denise's love extended to her sisters, Monica Price (Scott), Sharon Gill (Doug), Michelle Arnold (Chris), and her brother, Jimmy Dale Miller Jr. (Ketra). Her life was built on the strong foundation laid by her parents, the late Jimmy Dale Miller and Linda Jean Haselden Miller.

A leader at heart, Denise was the pillar of Crusaders on Campus, an invaluable adviser to the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), a mentor for Teacher Cadets, and the guiding force behind the Academic Challenge at Johnsonville High School. Her excellence and dedication were recognized by her peers, having been awarded Teacher of the Year twice, and honored as South Carolina's State Teacher of the Year – a testament to her impact on education.

Denise's worship and service at Center Baptist Church were instrumental to her community. She was known as "The Church Lady" and a member of the church's ensemble group "CrossRoads". She lived her faith daily. She also served as the Sunday School Nursery teacher and was the Mission Sisters Co-Director for numerous years. Her interests illuminated the world around her; from her love of flowers and gardening to her joy in holiday decorating, Denise created beauty wherever she went.

Denise who was also known as “Neesie” to her many friends, will be remembered as a friendly, intelligent, and faith-filled woman who exuded warmth and care to all. Her legacy will continue to inspire, and her memory will be treasured always by her family, friends, students, and colleagues. The world is indeed brighter for having been graced by Denise's presence, and though she will be greatly missed, the lessons she taught, the love she shared, and the faith she nurtured will endure forever in the hearts of those who knew her.

Alma Marie Newman, a beacon of intelligence and spirit, passed away at the age of 97 on October 22, 2025, at The Landings in Georgetown, S.C. Born on May 21, 1928, in Woodbury, Pennsylvania to John M. Lockard and Emma E. Clapper Lockard, she was the ninth child of 13. She was the beloved matriarch who taught her family the value of hard work, the importance of faith, and the joy of living life to the fullest.

Alma found her first success as an entrepreneur in the beauty industry, where her talent and passion for cosmetology led her to own a flourishing business. Her abundant personality and sense of purpose led her in a second career as a dedicated telecommunicator, a role in which she excelled and earned the respect and admiration of her peers. Alma's commitment to her profession was paralleled by her active involvement in her church, the First United Methodist Church of Conway, where she was a devoted member.

Predeceased by her husband, John Lee Newman, Alma's legacy is carried on through her children, Barry Thomas (Diane) and David Newman (Sharon), and her cherished grandchildren, Leigh Owens (Chris), Jon Thomas (Jennifer), Emily Newman, and Rylee Newman, along with a sister, Ollie Brown of Pennsylvania. Her blessings multiplied with her great-grandchildren, Brittany Smith (Zachary), Logan Owens (Jessica), Michelle Chewning (Chase), Jessica Mullins (Lawson), and Piper Leigh, and further blossomed with her great-great-grandchildren, Harper, Stella, Beau, Oliver, Christopher, Jaxson, Hadley, and Rylan.

Her life story is a tale of a family circle completed, of love multiplied, and wisdom passed down through generations. From her skilled hands to her kind heart, Alma touched numerous lives both within her family and in the wider community.

The family wishes to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff of The Landings of Georgetown and Crescent Hospice for the exceptional care, kindness, and compassion they showed Alma in her final days.
