Mary Ellen Owens Lawrimore, known as Mary Ellen to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, at MUSC Health Florence Medical Center. Born on January 15, 1948, in Georgetown County, SC, Mary Ellen was a beacon of kindness and generosity throughout her 78 years of life.

Mary Ellen was the cherished daughter of the late Alford Odis Owens and Mary Effie Nettles Owens. She grew up alongside her brothers, Merrill Owens (Dean) and Barry Owens (Gay), and her sister, Vivian McClain (Dick). She was predeceased by her husband, Ronald Lawrimore; brothers, Jimmy Owens and David Owens, who both held a special place in her heart.

As a homemaker, Mary Ellen dedicated her life to creating a warm and welcoming environment for her family. She was a devoted mother to her sons, Basil Owens Jr. (Christy) and Jamie Lawrimore (Tara), and her daughter, Melanie Lawrimore Whitlock (Drew). Her love and guidance were also extended to her grandchildren, Mallory Owens Flynn (Stuart), Basil Owens, III, MacKenzie Lawrimore, Brianna Lawrimore, and Turner Whitlock, as well as her great-grandchildren, Harker Flynn, Salter Flynn, and Brooks Owens. She was a familiar face in the church kitchen, where she loved to help prepare meals for various events. Her faith was the cornerstone of her existence, and she lived her life as a testament to her love for God.

Farming was an integral part of her life. She first worked on her Dad’s farm beside her parents and siblings. When she married her husband, Ronald, she became a farmer’s wife and continued the tradition with her sons. Her hands-on approach and dedication to the land and its legacy were evident in all she did.

Known for her adventurous spirit, Mary Ellen enjoyed traveling and exploring new places. Among her many interests, Mary Ellen was a beloved member of the Bingo Ladies group, participating in their monthly outings with enthusiasm. Her presence brought joy and laughter to the games, and she cherished these moments of camaraderie. There were memories made with her children and grandchildren that they will forever cherish. She was a dedicated fan to her children and grandchildren’s sporting events. Mary Ellen had a love for worship music and some of her favorite times were spent listening to her daughter, Melanie, sing and play the piano as well as hearing her granddaughter, Brianna, sing. A favorite pastime was sitting with her granddaughter, MacKenzie, watching investigative series on television. The grandchildren, especially Little Basil, savored her delicious pound cakes she baked for them. Her last wish was to meet her youngest grandson, Turner, and the time she most appreciated was the opportunity to read to him.

Mary Ellen's kind heart extended beyond her immediate circle. She was always ready to offer her time, food, or a visit to anyone in need. Her generosity knew no bounds, and she was often described as the best gift giver, a testament to her thoughtful and caring nature.
