Robert James Knox, 95, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026 at McLeod Hospice House in Florence, South Carolina.
Robert was born on January 18, 1931, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the second son of Thomas and Nelle Knox. After the passing of his mother when he was just four years old, his father made the difficult decision to place his three sons in the care of Bonnie Oaks Children’s Home. It was there, under the guidance of Dr. and Mrs. Keese during Robert’s formative years, that his character was shaped—leaving a lasting influence not only on his life, but on the lives of his children and grandchildren.
After completing the 10th grade, Robert began his military career, first serving in the United States Army and later in the United States Air Force. His service took him across the globe, beginning with his time in Germany with the Army. During his years in the Air Force, he was stationed in Morocco, France, Thailand, and Turkey— experiences that fulfilled his deep desire to travel and see the world. A proud veteran, his deep love for his country was reflected in his service and unwavering sense of duty. His military evaluations consistently recognized his integrity, leadership, and steadfast commitment—qualities that defined not only his career, but the way he lived his life. Robert’s commitment to serving his country spanned twenty-seven and a half years.
Following his retirement from the military, Robert continued to apply his skills and expertise through his work with Lockheed Corporation in Charleston, South Carolina. His professional life reflected the same steadfast work ethic and sense of purpose that defined his years of service. His commitment to helping others extended beyond his career through his involvement with the Freemasons and the Shriners—organizations dedicated to serving those in need—reflecting a life marked by generosity, humility, and enduring service.
Beyond his career accomplishments, Robert’s greatest pride and deepest joy were found in his family. In 1955, he married the love of his life, Beverly, and together they built a life centered on devotion, partnership, and family. He was a devoted father to his four daughters, and his love for them was evident in the values he instilled and the life he created. In time, that love extended to his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-greatgrandchild, who brought him immense pride and joy and carried forward the legacy he held so dear.
In his quieter moments, he found peace in fishing and hunting, expressed himself through poetry, and embraced opportunities to travel and explore. He always had a smile and enjoyed a good joke followed by a long hardy laugh. Robert and Beverly shared many years together around the world and in Charleston until her passing in 1985, a loss that marked the end of a deeply cherished chapter in his life, but never diminished the love they shared.
In later years, Robert found companionship again with Juanita Cantey, who became his devoted partner. Together, they shared many happy years in Charleston and Hemingway, and he was deeply loved by Juanita’s children, who embraced him as their own.
Robert is survived by daughters Breta (Mark) Field, Bridget (John) Cline, and long-time partner, Juanita Cantey as well as her children Kathy (Jay) Cockfield, Karen Hooks, and Al (Fran) Cantey. Robert is survived by 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
In addition to his parents, siblings, and wife, Robert was predeceased by daughters Brenda Griffin and Bronwyn McKenney, and 1 grandchild.
A Graveside Service, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2026 at Carolina Funeral Home and Gardens, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, South Carolina, 29406.
