I walked into a small restaurant in Raleigh a couple weeks ago for lunch. Six people behind the counter, music playing, but not one person looked up.
No smile, no “hey there,” not even a head nod. Just silence. I stood there a little longer than I should’ve, waiting for something human to happen. When someone finally came to the register, they didn’t say a word. I ordered. I paid.
Still nothing.
The food was good. We didnt share it because the experience was so odd it’s just not a place I can recommend.
What stuck with me wasn’t what I ate, it was how the place felt. Cold. Empty. Like no one wanted to be there, including the people working.
On the way out, I noticed a sign by the door. It read, “Attitude is everything. Smile.” The irony stopped me in my tracks. That little sign said everything the room didn’t.
And that’s when it hit me. It’s not enough to open a business, you have to build a space.
People don’t just come for food or coffee or products. They come because they want to belong somewhere. They want to feel seen, remembered, welcomed. They want to walk through your door and think, “Yeah, this is my spot.”
You don’t build a business with drywall and décor. You build it with how you make people feel.
That’s what keeps them coming back.
