March is Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month, a critical time dedicated to educating pet owners about hidden household dangers.
Common risks include human medications (especially NSAIDs), chocolate, xylitol (sugar-free products), grapes/raisins, household cleaners, and toxic plants like lilies. Proactive pet-proofing and knowing emergency contacts are key.
Key Tips for Pet Poison Prevention:
- Secure Medications: Store all human prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs, especially chewable ones, in cabinets, never on counters or in open purses.
- Identify Toxic Foods: Keep chocolate, garlic, onions, grapes, raisins, and products with xylitol (gum, candy) securely away from pets.
- Check Plants: Ensure houseplants are non-toxic. Lilies, sago palms, azaleas, and philodendrons are highly dangerous.
- Household Hazards: Keep cleaners, detergents, antifreeze, and fertilizers locked away. Be aware that scented oils and, for cats, lilies are very toxic.
- Secure Trash: Use tightly sealed, pet-proof trash cans, as pets often ingest dangerous garbage.
In Case of Emergency:
If you suspect your pet has ingested something poisonous, contact your veterinarian immediately or call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888.426.4435 (available 24/7).
