Macular Degeneration Foundation (MDF) was founded as a 501c3 tax-exempt charitable medical research and educational foundation dedicated to:
"Support”
It is our mission to be a personal contact by providing toll-free phone lines that patients can call to receive free information about Macular Degeneration, the treatments, and resources available to make coping with this disease a little easier. W
e work in cooperation with and provide support grants to other organizations to set up local low vision support groups, and provide Comcast for interactive education for groups. "Research to Restore Vision"
We interview researchers and investigate all new prospective treatments and clinical trials. In addition to the support of long-term efforts in the fields of Stem Cell and Genetic research for an ultimate cure, we are particularly interested in promising near-term, scientific studies designed to inhibit the progression of macular degeneration and restore a measurable amount of vision to all. In the past we have funded grants through NIH, University of Arizona, Pacific University Oregon, Harvard, and UC Davis. "People Helping People"
As Macular Degeneration effects mostly an older generation on fixed income, we have established this branch of our organization for direct support for people in need. We have begun a “recycle” program for magnifiers and low vision devices. As machines are no longer needed, they can be donated to our foundation. We pay for the shipping so the donor is not inconvenienced. We are establishing relationships with low vision centers that can screen patients for need of financial aid, matching them with the best machines, and providing the patient with training on the machine.
