Steve Custer

Stephen Warren Custer (Steve), age 79 of Newburgh, IN, passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2025. He was born September 26, 1946, to the late W. Clinton and Eva G. Custer. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Alan Custer, his sister, Cathy “Kitten” Custer Guilliams, his sister-in-law, Erma C. He retired from AK Steel after a 40-year career with the company (Ashland Works and Rockport Works) as a mechanical and environmental engineer and later as a safety director. Following his retirement from AK Steel (formerly Armco Steel), he stayed extremely active as both a handyman and a member of the golf staff of the Rolling Hills Country Club in Newburgh, IN. He was highly sought after for his mechanical and carpentry expertise – notably in repairing lawnmowers, w**d eaters, and other related equipment.

His relationship with Jesus Christ was extremely important to him and was evidenced by many years of faithful servant leadership to a number of churches. Most recently, he was a member of the Water’s Edge Church in Henderson, KY, where his son, Dr. Steve Custer, serves as Pastor. From chairing building programs such as the construction and renovation of FBC Christian Life Center (Ashland, KY) to serving as a facilities cleanup team member at Living Word Christian Church (Newburgh, IN), to construction projects and VBS service at FBC (Morganfield, KY), to maintenance projects at Water’s Edge Church (Henderson, KY), Steve fully used his gifts and talents to serve the Lord.

He was an avid coin collector and was the current Vice President of the Evansville Coin Club (IN) and he loved to attend auctions as well as the Newburgh Senior Center. Steve was always willing to lend a hand to someone in need, particularly in recent years, in repairing lawn equipment.

Family was of utmost importance to him, and he used every effort to invest in them on a daily basis. His family would say that he was the finest husband, father, and grandfather they could ever hope to have. They are comforted in knowing that they will be reunited with him in Heaven one day and that until then, he was welcomed into Heaven with the words, well done!

Two opportunities exist to celebrate Steve’s life. First, visitation will be from 1-3 pm at Tomblinson’s Funeral Home in Henderson, KY, on Sunday, December 14. A service will follow at 3 pm, officiated by his son and his pastor, Dr. Steve Custer. Second, visitation will be from 9 AM to 11 AM at Steen Funeral Home in Ashland, KY, on Tuesday, December 16.
