During Black History Month, we honor the legacy of James “Jimmy” Gay III, the first Black mortician in the State of Nevada and a valued member of the Palm Mortuaries family.

Jimmy was not only a trailblazer in the funeral profession, but also a dedicated activist and community leader whose impact helped shape Las Vegas. As a hotel executive and NAACP board member, he played a vital role in desegregating Las Vegas Strip hotels and advancing equality across our city.

We are deeply honored to be part of Jimmy’s story. He will always be remembered as a member of the Palm Mortuaries family. Jimmy’s final resting place is in our Roses II Mausoleum at Palm Downtown Mortuary & Cemetery, where a memorial message in his honor can be found in the Garden of Dreams.

When making decisions about a final resting place, the cost of a burial plot is one of many factors to consider.

Traditional in-ground cemetery plots are commonly thought of when it comes to burial options, but there are other types of properties for both cremations and casket burials that fall within a variety of price points. We can assist you in choosing cemetery property that meets your tastes, preferences and budget. Go to https://bit.ly/4bszzhW to learn more.

At King David Memorial Cemetery, we came together to commemorate International and Nevada State Holocaust Remembrance Day—a day dedicated to honoring the six million Jews and millions of others whose lives were taken during the Holocaust.

In partnership with the Sperling-Kronberg-Mack Holocaust Resource Center, this statewide remembrance and educational program centered on survivor testimony, educator-led learning and community reflection. We were deeply honored to hear from Thomas Jacobson, Holocaust survivor, former passenger on the St. Louis, and civil rights attorney, whose story powerfully reminded us of the consequences of hatred, indifference and injustice.

Through candle lighting, educational programming and meaningful dialogue led by Holocaust educators, elected officials, faith leaders and educators from across Nevada, we reflected on the enduring lessons of the Holocaust—particularly the importance of remembrance, education and standing against intolerance in all its forms. We also had the opportunity to unveil our newly built Holocaust remembrance memorial that is available to the public and located within the King David Memorial Cemetery.

May we continue to remember, to teach, and to ensure that the words “Never Again” remain a call to action for future generations.
