VAST space projects

VAST space projects We are nearly always around during business hours but it's best to schedule a private appointment.

Originally intended as a temporary space while the economy rebounded, and located in one of the many vacant storefronts in the Las Vegas Valley, Pop Up Art House established itself as the Valley's leading contemporary art gallery since May 2011. As of October 2012, the gallery reintroduced itself as a more permanent force, VAST space projects. Recognizing the tremendous opportunities in the local scene, the gallery remains committed to community-building through curated exhibitions within the gallery space and beyond. The gallery aims to show work that engages with or is informed/inspired by the unique resources of the place, or pays tribute to it. As a compendium of these times, each exhibition is accompanied by a catalog produced by the gallery's publishing arm, SmackSheets. While the Las Vegas Valley sits unenviably on the top of every economic downturn list -- edging even Detroit for the title of "America's Most Abandoned City" -- the lesson to be learned is that what goes bust must go boom. VAST space projects aims to take advantage of this downturn by bringing national voices into the local community and igniting a dialogue, facilitating an import/export exchange of ideas. The gallery recently relocated to a 5,000 square foot warehouse where programming focuses on installation exhibits. The gallery's interest in projects of site-and-situation-specific works, is further expanding with new satellites taking over spaces in a mid-century motel and a former medical building at Emergency Arts in the heart of Downtown Las Vegas.

Looking back, figurative/literal, this night was definitely like — your parents are out of town, invite all your creative friends over to play, kinda Vast moment. Plus, I got to meet artists, and have the joy of watching their work, and lives, grow. It’s like we all hung out at the best high school party, listening to punk rock, and will always be connected by our shared adventure. It was definitely a great way to commence London Biennale Las Vegas. Thank you for sharing. I can’t wait to see what’s coming!

Flash back to 2012 "Rainbow 7 Colors 7 Artists" London Biennale in Nevada at PUAH, VAST space projects, Henderson, NV.

Now on our website! Angela Kallus on her Little Blue Books:

“I started drawing that one booklet over and over again because it was not a regular shape—it started as a cheap art—history joke, a visual pun, quoting the autocratic shaped canvases and monochromes of the 20th—century (mostly male) painters…”

It's been a minute since a posting....If you are in LA, check out Erica Ryan Stallon's "STAR DECK Academy" at the contemporary artist-run space, Elephant, in Glassell Park. "The Box Set" includes a series of 4 performance-based installations about the quality of quantity. There is some pull of the moon stuff, and a great video, "Bedroom Scene". I'm some how lucky enough to be storing/hanging one of Erica's paintings in my bedroom. She, and her work, are terrific...Go See!

In a reversal, "Learning from LA", Las Vegas can take cues from LA's downtown "arts district" - I lived there 20 years ago and never been a fan of "districts". We have nothing but empty warehouses in LV. Open them up and give them away to artists in both cities and watch what happens here. Just a thought, Vegas. Here are some good quotes from the article: "But if L.A. is going to remain a creative capital, its civic and cultural leaders are going to need to do more than offer really great talk about how great we are. We need solid ideas — and the ex*****on of these — to keep Los Angeles a great place to be an artist. "City officials," the report states, "should work with local development corporations and other business organizations to develop a set of carrots and sticks that could encourage landlords to rent these spaces to arts organizations, creative sector businesses, freelancers and others with significant space needs." "Let's start by finding a way to keep the artists in town."

Way back in July of last year, The Times ran a story  about how development in the downtown Los Angeles Arts District — the old industrial zone between 1st and 7th Streets, east of Alameda — had long-time residents concerned about rising rents…

The works of two VAST space projects artists are discussed in detail today on NPR. Check out words about Patricia Burns and Marshall Scheuttle on the podcast. Definitely get to the "Recent Acquisitions" exhibit at UNLV Marjorie Barrick Museum if you are in Las Vegas.

The beauty of the desert, and the quirkiness of Las Vegas and Reno, are the jumping off points for many of the works on display at “Recent Acquisitions,” a show now at the Marjorie Barrick Museum at the University of Nevada/Las Vegas.
