Dry Eyes: Possible Link to Covid Infections and Understanding the Symptoms.

Dry eyes, a condition that causes discomfort and affects vision, has become a concern in recent months due to its possible link to viral infections. While winter weather can contribute to dry eyes, there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that Covid is responsible. In this article, we will discuss the symptoms, potential causes, and treatments for dry eyes, and explore the connection between dry eyes and Covid.

Understanding Dry Eyes and its Symptoms

Dry eyes occur when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. Tears play a crucial role in maintaining healthy eyes by providing lubrication, washing away debris, and reducing the risk of infection. Tears are composed of water, oil, and mucus. The oil layer, produced by oil glands around the eyes, helps prevent tears from evaporating too quickly. Inflammation in the oil glands is the underlying mechanism for dry eyes. Covid infections can cause inflammation, leading to dry eyes. The symptoms of dry eyes include burning, watering, itching or scratchiness, redness, intermittent blurry vision, sensitivity to light, and difficulty wearing contact lenses.

Possible Link between Covid Infections and Dry Eyes

Covid has been linked to several eye problems, including conjunctivitis (pink eye), which causes inflammation of the conjunctiva, a thin layer of tissue that covers the white part of the eye. Studies suggest that the Covid virus can also cause dry eyes. Inflammation in the oil glands around the eyes can occur as a result of the viral infection, leading to dry eyes.

Treatments for Dry Eyes

Several treatments are available to alleviate the symptoms of dry eyes. Artificial tears, available over-the-counter, mimic natural tears and provide lubrication to the eyes. Prescription eye drops may also be recommended if the artificial tears do not provide enough relief. Blocking the tear ducts to reduce tear drainage can be a treatment option in some cases. A humidifier can be used to increase humidity levels in the home or office. Switching to a different type of contact lens or wearing them less frequently may also be recommended. If you have had dry issues for a long period of time, please call our office today to make an appointment. We have seen many patients with dry eyes that were able to be corrected after just a basic office visit.

Understanding age-related vision changes

Just like your body, your eyes and vision change over time. While not everyone will experience the same symptoms, the following are common age-related vision changes:

• Need for more light. As you age, you need more light to see as well as you used to. Brighter lights in your work area or next to your reading chair will help make reading and other close-up tasks easier.

• Difficulty reading and doing close work. Printed materials can become less clear, in part because the lens in your eye becomes less flexible over time. This makes it harder for your eyes to focus on near objects than when you were younger.

• Problems with a glare. When driving, you may notice additional glare from headlights at night or sun reflecting off windshields or pavement during the day. Changes in your lenses in your eyes cause light entering the eye to be scattered rather than focused precisely on the retina. This creates more glare.

• Changes in color perception. The normally clear lens located inside your eye may start to discolor. This makes it harder to see and distinguish between certain color shades.

• Reduced tear production. With age, the tear glands in your eyes will produce fewer tears. This is particularly true for women experiencing hormone changes. As a result, your eyes may feel dry and irritated. Having an adequate amount of tears is essential for keeping your eyes healthy and for maintaining clear sight.

When is the last time you had an eye exam?
Come see us or call to schedule.

Myopia is the most frequent cause of distance vision impairment in the world and it is creating an alarming global or pandemic progression with deleterious ramifications for the quality of life and economic health of individuals and nations as a whole. Twenty-two percent of the current world population is affected which translates to 15 billion people.
The prevalence of myopia has increased to forty per cent by some estimates in Western countries. Myopia has doubled in the United States over the past 30 years. The prevalence of high myopia has increased eightfold.
There is a genetic component that is uncontrollable. The likelihood of developing myopia is eleven times higher if one of the parents is myopic and two to five percent higher if both parents are near-sighted.
Environmental causes of myopia play a secondary role by excessive near work (studying and the use of electronic devices) and too little outdoor activity. Increasing outdoor activity appears to have a partial protective effect. These effects are particularly important for children whose eyes may be still growing and will have a more profound effect upon the rate of progression
Keeping books more than twelve inches away with good lighting, sitting back from the computer, taking regular short breaks and increasing outdoor activities can actually reduce the rate of myopia development.
