My childhood was spent in a small farming community in Wisconsin. Although most of the local economy was dairy farming, I grew up in town. Early in my childhood, I started dreaming of helping others by becoming a doctor, a goal I never wavered from. Having done well in high school and Carlton College in Minnesota, I attended Medical School at the University of Chicago. My dream of being a doctor was finally realized. I later specialized in anesthesiology and for several years helped people through the stresses of surgery.
Over the decades since Medical school, I’ve watched the practice of medicine evolve. It seems now it’s all about money, both on the expense side (how to control the cost), and the profit side (big pharma and corporations). Even decision making has shifted to protocols, and “approved” traditional therapies. I often wonder, “where did the concept of helping people go?” Even now, I am determined to help people. Therefore, I’ve embarked upon a new project, namely, opening a wellness clinic in Hendersonville, NC, whose vision is helping people by putting them, and their needs, first and foremost with a goal of improved wellness.
Our new clinic and its website, Modern Mind and Body Clinics, emphasize our vision. Of course, this approach takes time, depends on mutual trust, and faces the reality that most health insurance companies only cover traditional therapies. Two pre-requisites are required for success. Both patients and care givers must DESIRE and BELIEVE that improved wellness is possible. Thus, in our clinic we start with getting to know each other, then establish mutual goals, followed by working together as a team, often including elements not commonly available. We encourage reading and web research.
Our practice is best described as Integrated Medicine, which means integrating traditional and non-traditional approaches. It does not rely on expensive medications as first treatment options, but rather focuses on wellness, utilizing sharing knowledge and experiences.
To expand the concept of wellness, alternate therapies are offered, including, infusion therapy, Life and Spiritual Coaching by Monica Griffin, massage therapy by Nicholas Safh, Hyperbaric oxygen therapies, Light therapy, and Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy.
My original childhood dream of putting people and their health first is being realized once again. Two expand this dream, the clinic may be adding additional services, a store, instructional videos, an oxygen bar, and other experts.
Our clinic’s wellness approach should be considered as supplementing other medical care. It is not a replacement.
