October is Dysautonomia Awareness Month!

Many people with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) or hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) also have a type of dysautonomia. There are different types of dysautonomia with different symptoms.

Dysautonomia, also called autonomic dysfunction, is a group of disorders that affect the autonomic nervous system.

People with EDS and HSD most commonly have a form of orthostatic intolerance. “Orthostasis” means to stand upright, so orthostatic intolerance refers to symptoms that occur due to standing up or being upright.

The two most common types of orthostatic intolerance are:

1️⃣ Orthostatic hypotension (OH) — low blood pressure on being upright.
2️⃣ Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) — an abnormal increase in heart rate when standing without a drop in blood pressure.

Symptoms of dysautonomia include:

● Tachycardia (fast heart rate)
● Palpitations (feeling the heart racing or pounding)
● Hypotension (low blood pressure)
● Lightheadedness
● Presyncope (a sense of being about to faint)
● Syncope (fainting)
● Blurred vision
😶‍🌫️Brain fog (problems with concentration and memory)
● Headaches
● Chest pain
● Shakiness
💤Chronic fatigue
● Exercise intolerance and feeling worse after exercise
● Swelling and/or discoloration of the legs after standing for short periods of time
● Cold, discolored hands and feet
● Temperature dysregulation
🥵Sweating
● Sleep disturbance
● Gastrointestinal issues
● Nausea
🚽Bladder dysfunction

Therapy is a lifeline, not a luxury. We create access to life-giving maternal mental health services in Tennessee and partner with insurance plans because moms matter too.

Together, We Are Never Alone.

Therapy can be intimidating, scary and hard. But therapy is conversations that occur on a scheduled basis. All of us at some time face struggles and all desire connection. Unfortunately and all too often, sometimes the connections we find can leave us more empty, isolated, feeling broken and alone. As a therapist, connecting with people who are struggling and letting them know they aren't alone in their struggle is vital. Some conversations are harder than others and each is meaningful. It is my job & pleasure to have these conversations with you. Each client is different, so is each conversation.

Since success of the progress depends on the depth of trust between client and therapist, it's always the focus of the relationships. Are you comfortable? Are you ready to have these conversations? If not, then let's evaluate what needs to change for you to feel ready for success.

I've worked intensely doing trauma therapy with children, adolescents and adults. Sometimes the conversations we replay in our heads t keep us stuck. Sometimes it's conversations that we aren't having that keep us stuck. Clearly, there is a lot at stake with our conversations and our communication.

I have been a licensed professional counselor in the state of Tennessee since 2015. It is an honor to get to connect with people and help them navigate their winding road. Whether you have anxiety, depression, grief or have an addiction, call me at The Counseling Nook to see if we might be able to work together to help you let go of that which no longer serves you.
