Hello Gi-Normous Kidney Stone! "Back pain" can have lots of causes . That's why a detailed history is essential. This is why I take x-rays to look for anatomical features that are (or not) within reason of what is 'normal'. The fact of the matter is as a Chiropractor, we are trained to detect bio-mechanical, spinal, and joint disorders that lead to neurological difficulties. We call this dysfunction a Subluxation. With this 60 year old he did NOT have the common kidney stone caused "back pain". Most "back pain" brought on by kidney stones are pains that come in waves. May cause nausea or vomiting. Pain upon urination or a partial urination flow. On/off pain with certain postures or positions...He is a truck driver who had early morning pain with limitation in tying his shoes for last 15 years...takes him a while to "feel" okay. You know anyone like him who waits til it's a bit too late? For me as a Chiropractor, I do not diagnose or treat internal diseases or conditions of major organs. I stick to my scope of care, and call in the opinion of other health care personnel to "name" a non-chiropractic finding. In this case this person was told he's likely to have had this stone for years...And, because he didn't have the traditional pains/symptoms caused by kidney stones they will watch and see what happens to it over time. Not sure I agree with his doctors recommendation. Sometimes the removal of a stone based on size or location is far more challenging then wait and see approach. However, I know I did my job. And now we can move on to improving his spinal health and helping him get better by aligning his spine, reducing nerve interference and giving him advice on healthier living to reduce the likelihood of having return episodes. If you know of anyone with persistent back pain, or simply wants to see the health of their spine? Then give Humiston Family Chiropractic a call at 828-694-0020. Or simply our reply here.
