After over 25+ years in corporate America, almost exclusively serving in a finance and accounting roles, I decided to leave these familiar confines and start my own business. As I set out on this process, I realized that I had to spend a substantial amount of time defining what my Company’s value system needed to be, in fact I spent more time on my Shared Values model than I did on my financial model (and my financial model is very robust). I did this by reflecting on what was most important to me and realizing that it needed to be simple and understandable for everyone that would be involved with my company. In short these are what I am calling Our Shared Values: Kindness, Compassion, Integrity, Creativity and Accountability. I have found that while all of these words have commonly understood definitions, they all have very different and personal meanings in the form of experiences, images and anecdotes. The other important feature of Our Shared Values is that there is no hierarchy to these values, they are not in conflict with one another and in fact must co-exist in order to be their most effective. Finally, on the Shared Values front I wanted to make sure that my Company delivered a service or product that by its very nature was the embodiment of these Shared Values. This was important to me because of my experience in Financial Services and Energy industries, in that while you certainly could exhibit these Shared Values in your work, the Shared Values would not be obvious or of essential importance to the actual product or service.
So, with this as a back drop I made the decision to get into the Home Care business. This decision was based on two primary drivers; Given my most recent experience in the reverse mortgage industry I was very familiar with the attractive demographic trends of the aging of the population along with individuals desire to age in place and second and most importantly the Shared Values that I developed perfectly aligned with the services that would be provided to the clients in their homes. Every client deserves Kindness and Compassion in how we treat them and their family, they expect that we have Integrity as we deal with their private and personal situations in the sanctity of their home, we need to utilize Creativity as we come up with solutions to support their needs and the client needs to know that we are Accountable to deliver upon the promises we have made to them. The next decision I made was that I wanted to align my Home Care business with a strong partner that had the expertise, reputation and most importantly the same value system that I had developed. I found that partner in Assisting Hands® Home Care. Assisting Hands® is a recognized leader in the Home Care field and has created a value driven culture that has a reputation of delivering best in class services to its clients throughout the United States.
With the solid foundation of Our Shared Values and a strong partnership with Assisting Hands® I am excited to be building a company that delivers exceptional services to our clients and provides a work environment that allows employees to create new opportunities for themselves and their families. I am excited to be the owner of Assisting Hands Richmond and look forward to delivering Our Shared Values to everyone we come in contact with.
