4 Decades of Extraordinary Care and Service - Celebrating 44 Years of Cumulative Service and the Retirement of a Dedicated and Faithful MAHOVA Employee - Cindy Pleasants, LPN/QA Coordinator
• What originally brought you to MAHOVA, and what made you stay all these years?
I worked at the old Richmond Memorial Hospital on Westwood Ave in Richmond before coming here, which has now been made into condos. I wanted to work somewhere closer to home so put in an application @ MAHOVA and was hired full-time 7-3 LPN. The Care Center back then was located where Lilac Garden is located. The Memory Support Unit was at the end of the hall separated by a bookcase with a hidden latch. I had both of my children while working at MAHOVA. My son Justin is 44 and daughter Lydia is 42. I have stayed all these years as MAHOVA just feels like Home to me, the residents are loving and giving. Staff are my friends.
• What part of your work here has given you the greatest sense of pride or purpose?
Of course, helping the residents and their families thru the years. There have been many. I have worked with many mothers, daughters, brothers, sisters. I have pride in my enduring relationships with many staff members. I love spreading the word of the great care given to each and every resident, to all I meet.
• Is there a favorite memory or moment with residents, families, or staff that you’ll always carry with you?
Back in “the day” MAHOVA had summer staff cook-outs off campus at the police conference building on Laburnum Ave, which is now the Social Services building. Next to it was a park and picnic area. Charlie Frank, the administrator then, asked for suggestions from staff what they wanted to eat at the picnic. There were several suggestions and I wrote in fried shrimp. Well guess who cooked the shrimp? ME! It was fun and everybody had a great time. That was the day I was chosen as Employee of the Year by staff, I have so many great stories.
• How has MAHOVA grown or changed for the better during your time here?
MAHOVA has grown leaps and bounds since I came to work here. B-D wing was added, the kitchen was expanded. CCW and CCE was added. The updated Richard E. Brown Memory Unit was added. There was no Village when I first started. The first Village units built were across from the Lobby entrance. They built more and more after that. On D and B wings; Two rooms were made into one large unit for married couples. Next was the B-Wing renovation into Suites, then C-Wing renovation into Suites. We now have D-Wing suites.
• What will you miss most about coming to work each day?
The daily interaction with staff and residents.
• What advice would you give to new employees just starting their journey at MAHOVA?
It’s the best place to work. Great benefits. Small patient load. The pay may not be what you were thinking but stay and see how you like it. It will surprise you!
• What are you most looking forward to in retirement?
It’s a new beginning, I am going to fly like an eagle!
