You're so lucky...
So often in kinship, foster care and adoption we say that to kids and parents meaning well. However, it doesn't always FEEL lucky and many times we overlook grief and loss in an effort to find the silver lining. "You're so lucky that you have this great family" - (overlooking the hard stuff that happened to get here and the loss of the good times that may have also happened that are now only memories). "You're so lucky that you were able to adopt this great kid" (overlooking the loss of their infertility).

What could we say instead that leaves room for the grief and the gain? "I'm so sorry that you had such a hard start in life. I'm glad that you have a mom that keeps you safe and reads you bedtime stories now." "I'm sorry that you didn't get to experience parenting through pregnancy. I am happy to see what an awesome mom you are and glad that could happen through adoption."

The C2Adopt team is saddened to share the unexpected loss of Clintonya Cooper. We grieve with her family and cannot adequately express what a vast space is left empty in her passing. We thank everyone for your support and understanding as we learn to continue on in her absence.

Today is a GREAT day for Adoptee Rights in Virginia. C2Adopt believes firmly in the right of every adopted adult to have access to their own information, including their original birth certificate. We have been happy to continue our education of legislators on the importance of adoptee rights. HB301 goes to full Senate for hearing next week and we hope that adopted persons will finally have the same rights as others in Virginia! Thanks to Delegate Katrina Callsen and the other co-patrons!
