The holidays can be a challenge for children and youth who have experienced the loss and separation from their birth/first parents. If you do only one thing - CENTER your child. Pay attention to their needs and capacity. This may mean that the family gatherings or traditions in your family have to take a backseat this year or that you can't make it to multiple places in a short window of time. Slow down. Focus on being with your child. Focus on keeping communication open. Be kind to yourself and to them. We are here to support you! Reach out for the care and expertise of folks who get it!

It's been a nutty couple of weeks huh? A lack of routine often leads to overwhelm for our bodies. Humans thrive on predictable, patterned rhythms. When we have days off for holidays and extra activities, surprise snow days and last minute changes in plans - we FEEL that deeply. For our kids that may look more like defiance and anger or withdrawal and shutdown. As adults, we can help by working to keep routines where and how we can - to signal safety to our bodies - and help soothe stressed nervous systems. Take a deep breath - you can do this!

After more than 25 years of pioneering this work, C.A.S.E. is proud to release two landmark research reports that provide the strongest evidence to date that adoption-competent mental health services deliver measurably better outcomes for adoptive families—and that far too few families can access them.

With this data, we are calling on policy makers, states, systems, and providers to adopt national standards for adoption-competent mental health care, invest in training and credentialing, and expand public access to directories of qualified clinicians.

As we near the end of Adoption Awareness month - we want to reflect on ways we can do better. The story of adoption is often told by professionals and adoptive parents. This is true when we talk about the history of child welfare and adoption and it's also true about the specific stories of adoption within families. Think about books, keynotes at conferences, interviews on TV, podcasts, YouTube and TikTok channels. C2Adopt wants to ask "Whose Story Is It?" Whose perspective and truth do we miss when we pass over adoptees or birth/first parents? What harms do we perpetuate when we elevate some perspectives over others? What new approaches are we not taking when we disregard the voice of adoptees? This month AND EVERY MONTH - C2Adopt is committed to seeking out adoptee voices, listening to their stories, and allowing our practices and approaches to be transformed by the wisdom shared in every story.
