As we near the end of Adoption Awareness month - we want to reflect on ways we can do better. The story of adoption is often told by professionals and adoptive parents. This is true when we talk about the history of child welfare and adoption and it's also true about the specific stories of adoption within families. Think about books, keynotes at conferences, interviews on TV, podcasts, YouTube and TikTok channels. C2Adopt wants to ask "Whose Story Is It?" Whose perspective and truth do we miss when we pass over adoptees or birth/first parents? What harms do we perpetuate when we elevate some perspectives over others? What new approaches are we not taking when we disregard the voice of adoptees? This month AND EVERY MONTH - C2Adopt is committed to seeking out adoptee voices, listening to their stories, and allowing our practices and approaches to be transformed by the wisdom shared in every story.

The ACM is BY, FOR, and WITH adoptees to "explore how adopted individuals and groups develop socio-political awareness of oppressive structures related to adoption and then move to community action to disrupt them." C2Adopt looks forward to integrating the findings and ongoing research into our programs and approaches - keeping adoptees at the center always!

The phrase "Coming out of the fog" is commonly used among adult adoptees to describe the moment that they realized the impact of adoption in their life. Adult adoptees need support that is built by and form them with folks who have shared experiences. C2Adopt holds a virtual support group every month - FREE of charge - to provide this critical support. It is a group by and for those who have lived experience. It's open to anyone in Virginia, regardless of age, type of adoption or what agency may have been involved at the time of placement. Join C2Adopt this month as we center Adoptees and their experiences for National Adoption Awareness Month. Try this conversation prompt with your child or use as a journal prompt for yourself as an adult. "What is your first memory where you knew or "felt" like you were adopted?" Allow this prompt to explore and uncover all of the thoughts, feelings and body experiences that may be there - with curiosity and without judgement. Depending on the age - consider: Who was there? What did it feel like? Do I notice anything in my body now when I think of that moment? What would I want to do for that smaller/younger version of myself in that moment? Or what do I wish the adults/other people had done for me in that moment?
