âď¸ Protect Your Back While Shoveling Snow âď¸
Snow shoveling is one of the most common causes of winter back injuries. A few smart habits can save you weeks of pain:
1. Warm up first
Treat shoveling like a workout. Walk for a few minutes and gently stretch your back, hips, and shoulders.
2. Use your legs, not your back
Bend at your knees and hips. Keep your back straight and lift with your legs.
3. Keep the shovel close to your body
The farther the snow is from you, the more strain on your spine.
4. Avoid twisting
Turn your whole body instead of twisting your spine when tossing snow.
5. Push when possible, lift only when necessary
Pushing snow is much easier on your back than lifting it.
6. Take breaks
Short breaks prevent muscle fatigue and reduce injury risk.
7. Donât overdo it
Heavy, wet snow is especially tough on the spine. Pace yourself.
8. Or⌠wait till spring đ
