When Don arrived at our facility several weeks ago, he needed extra assistance to get out of bed. Our Clinical Nurse Supervisor, Crystal Hart, started a bet with him at the time that when he was able to stand on his own and walk the hallway, she would practice every day in order for her to do the splits. Well lo and behold, Don kept up his end of the bargain! Now it was Crystal’s turn to prove herself.

This fun banter kept Don’s spirits through his rehab recovery. Now, Don is discharging to home just in time for Thanksgiving with his family.

Don, we wish you the best! Thank you for choosing Hermann Area District Hospital for your rehab.

Congratulations to Cheryl Strand, RT (R) (M) (CT) on her Great Catch!

Cheryl performed an xray of the right forearm. Cheryl and the ER provider noticed a fracture of the distal right ulna. The patient had discharged with a disc of the images before the xrays were read by the Radiologist and was told to follow up with Orthopedics. Cheryl read the report the following morning and noticed the ulnar fracture was not mentioned, so she asked the reading Radiologist to look at the exam again, and the report was addended. Cheryl faxed the addended report to the patient's Orthopedic doctor and powershared the images so they would have everything when the patient was there for their appointment.

Cheryl, you are always looking out for your patients! We appreciate you!

Congratulations to Summer Semler, MLT on her TWO Great Catches!

1. Summer was reading over Standard Operating Procedures, and found that we needed to create a procedure for blue top tubes for patients with over 55% hematocrits (extremely low frequency in our patient population), otherwise we potentially would have falsely elevated results. Summer is helping to find a solution to make sure these patients receive accurate coagulation results.

2. Summer found that during processing, the analyzer failed to run lactic acid automatically. This may indicate a potential method inconsistency as the time sensitive sample appears to have been processed but has not. This issue causes delays in critical testing impacting specimen stability and patient care.

The Laboratory is an extremely detail-oriented job, and we are so glad to have someone like Summer to make sure all our i's are dotted and t's are crossed!

Lung cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US, there have been significant improvements in survival and treatment outcomes.

The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) and other health organizations recommend annual LDCT screening for individuals who meet specific criteria. This allows for early detection when the cancer is most treatable.

You may be at higher risk if you:
• Are between the ages of 50-80.
• Have a smoking history of 20 “pack-years” (a pack-year is calculated by multiplying the number of packs smoked per day by the number of years you have smoked.
• Are a current smoker or have quit within the last 15 years

Did you know you can be screened for lung cancer with a quick CT scan that uses low dose radiation?

Ask your provider today about your lung cancer risks and see if you qualify to have a CT Low Dose Lung Cancer Screening (LDCT)!
