Thank you to the Donelson Hermitage Chamber of Commerce and its Economic Development Committee for the opportunity to be part of today’s meeting. We’re grateful for your partnership and for the work you do to support a strong, thriving community. We also want to thank our local Hermitage police precinct for donating the space to bring all the different community partners together.

Cindy Bergmeier, CEO of TriStar Summit Medical Center, was able to share how healthcare and economic development connect — from strengthening collaboration across organizations to supporting the people and resources needed to keep care close to home.

At TriStar Summit, we’re committed to being an active community partner and to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care for our neighbors, friends and families. Thank you to all our community members for the collaboration and the continual trust you place in us to care for the community.

the American Cancer Society reports that colorectal cancer is increasing by 2% each year in people ages 50-54 and in those younger than 50? The good news is that simple steps can help lower your risk. We're sharing five ways to start protecting your health today.

We’re proud to be part of our broader HCA Healthcare system of care, where caregivers at Sarah Cannon Cancer Network treat more than 130,000 cancer patients each year. That expertise means if screening ever leads to a diagnosis, you’ll have access to coordinated care and guidance from trusted cancer specialists.

When it comes to colorectal cancer screening, it’s completely normal to have questions. Having the right information — and knowing you’ll be cared for by a compassionate team — can make taking the next step feel much easier.

Meet Kennedy, an endoscopy nurse at TriStar Summit Medical Center. Before joining the endoscopy team, she spent several years in pediatric nursing, eventually discovering her passion for endoscopy and the wide range of procedures she gets to support. But above all, what she loves most is caring for patients.

“I love so many things about being a nurse, especially in endoscopy. I love being with the patient from start to finish — spending time with them, getting to know them, and hearing their stories. Plus, the human body is so fascinating — everything working together in such an amazing and intricate way.”

When it comes to colonoscopies specifically, Kennedy is passionate about helping patients feel comfortable, informed, and confident in their decisions.

“Colorectal cancer can be a silent killer. A colonoscopy is a preventative test that works to screen for — and even prevent — cancer. It’s one of the best prophylactic screening procedures you can do: low risk and high reward. Honestly, there’s no real downside to doing it.”

Kennedy and her small‑but‑mighty team are committed to reassuring patients, answering questions, and encouraging everyone to talk with their doctor about the right time to get screened.

Not sure which screening you may need? Your primary care provider can help guide you to the option that’s best for you.

If you’re due for a colorectal cancer screening — or if you’re simply unsure — start with a conversation. Your health is worth it.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month—a time to focus on prevention, early detection, and the steps that can truly save lives.

In a recent feature piece in the The Wilson Post, Dr. Matthew Neff, gastroenterologist at TriStar Summit, highlights a powerful truth: colorectal cancer is highly preventable with regular screening.

Screening colonoscopies don’t just detect cancer—they can stop it before it starts by finding and removing precancerous polyps in a single visit. For most adults, screenings begin at age 45, but your personal plan may vary based on your health history.

At-home screening tests can be a helpful first step, but colonoscopy remains the most comprehensive option for prevention and early detection.

Taking action today could save your life tomorrow. Talk with your provider about what screening option is right for you.

We’re celebrating Health Workforce Well Being Day — a great reminder that taking care of ourselves matters just as much as the care we give others. 💙
Today, we’re also shining a little light on Kristen, our Employee Health Nurse, who shows up every day with so much heart for our team. With 18 years of nursing experience, she plays a key role in making sure our colleagues feel supported and cared for.

A Mt. Juliet native, Kristen started her career here at TriStar Summit as a new grad, working on the 6th floor and in the float pool before moving into Employee Health five years ago. Her guiding north star has always been simple and steady: caregiving is her calling.

“I wish I had a big defining moment,” she shared. “But nursing is truly my calling. I’ve always been a caregiver and I love taking care of people.”

Kristen found tremendous joy and fulfillment at the bedside and never imagined her career would one day shift to caring for a different — but equally important — group: her colleagues.

“I especially loved caring for patients and was a little hesitant at first to come down here,” she admitted. “Once I was here, I fell in love with being able to extend that same care to our colleagues.”

Kristen is passionate about helping teammates manage stress and care for their wellbeing both at work and at home. Her advice? Find habits and activities that help you de stress — and remember that looks different for everyone. For some, it’s exercise; for others, it may be reading, sports, or something creative. She also encourages sticking to the basics: move your body, get good sleep, drink water, and lean on available support — whether that’s someone like her or resources like the Employee Assistance Program.

“I love supporting colleagues, talking them through things and helping them to advocate for themselves,” she says. Thank you Kristen for the genuine care truly makes a difference for our team.

What started as a normal morning quickly changed Wayne’s life.

Living with neuropathy, he didn’t think twice about the numbness in his hands—until he suddenly fell. Wayne was having a stroke.

Stroke symptoms can appear without warning: numbness, confusion, trouble speaking, vision changes, dizziness, or loss of balance. Acting fast and calling 911 can make all the difference.

Wayne missed the critical treatment window, making rehabilitation his path forward. At TriStar Summit Medical Center, he faced a new reality—learning to stand, walk, and regain independence,

But Wayne made a decision early on: he was going to work.

Through weeks of physical and occupational therapy, he pushed forward—step by step, day by day. The progress wasn’t easy, but it was powerful.

Today, Wayne is stronger than ever and continues outpatient therapy at TriStar Summit, focused on becoming an even better version of himself.

Wayne’s story is also a reminder to know the signs of stroke. Think BE FAST:
🧠 Balance loss
👀 Eyesight changes
😊 Facial drooping
💪 Arm weakness
🗣️ Speech difficulty
⏱️ Time to call 911

Recovery is possible—with hard work, support, and timely care.
