For more than 40 years, Dr. Sal Alfano has faithfully served Central Pennsylvania’s EMS community with unwavering leadership, advocacy, and dedication. He began his role as Medical Director in 1985 with West Shore Advanced Life Support and carried that responsibility through decades of growth and change, ultimately serving with Life Lion EMS.

Throughout his tenure, Dr. Alfano was not only a trusted Medical Director, but a true champion for EMS providers at every level. He supported our communications, billing, and fleet teams; served as a board member and committee leader with the Emergency Health Services Federation; helped develop the Cumberland County ALS plan in the early 1980s; and served as President of the Cumberland County EMS Council—all while working full time as an emergency physician at Holy Spirit Hospital.

Individuals with this depth of commitment and service are rare. We are deeply grateful for Dr. Alfano’s decades of leadership, mentorship, and friendship, and we wish him the very best as he enjoys more time with his wife, Linda, and their children and grandchildren.

Thank you, Sal, for everything. Your legacy will continue to guide us.

🎅🚑 A Special Delivery with Life Lion 🎄✨

This week, Life Lion had the honor of escorting a very important passenger—Santa Claus—and his trusty elf, Kevin, on a mission filled with smiles and holiday cheer.

Santa and Kevin made special stops at the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development and the Penn State Health's Lancaster Pediatric Center, spreading joy to pediatric patients, families, and care teams along the way.

Moments like these remind us that sometimes the most important care we deliver isn’t medical—it’s compassion, connection, and a little bit of holiday magic. ❤️🎁

From all of us at Life Lion Services, we wish our patients, families, and communities a safe, healthy, and joyful holiday season.

Recently, Life Lion had the privilege of working alongside our talented Trauma team here at Penn State Health. Dr. Ludwig and Dr. Cavaliere presented Trauma cases to our College of Medicine medical students before demonstrating a variety of 'hands on skills' with the Life Lion team. These students had the opportunity to train of common pre-hospital skills such as IO insertions, immobilization, hemorrhage control and finger thoracostomies. Phenomenal experience for the entire team!

Penn State Health Life Lion is proud to share that our program will undergo its CAMTS site inspection December 9th through 10th. This is a key step in our nearly 40 years commitment to excellence in HEMS and Critical Care transport medicine.
The purpose of the site visit will be to evaluate the program’s compliance with nationally established medical transport standards, with results determining whether and under what conditions accreditation should be awarded. CAMTS accreditation standards address patient care and safety in the transport environment, and anyone with pertinent information may request a public information interview by submitting a written request to ADMIN@CAMTS.ORG no later than 10 business days before the visit, indicating the nature of the information to be provided.
