Researchers at Penn State College of Medicine gathered for the 13th Pediatric Research Day, united under this year’s theme: Improving Children’s Lives Through Science.

This year’s Berlin Lecture featured D. Wade Clapp, MD, an internationally recognized physician-scientist who shared how preclinical models and phosphoproteomics are helping bring new treatments for rare pediatric cancers to the clinic.

Faculty presentations highlighted the strength of pediatric research across our college. Jeremy Hengst, PhD, shared his work on targeting n-Myc in MYCN-amplified solid tumors, and Tammy E. Corr, DO, presented new insights into academic achievement in children with a history of neonatal abstinence syndrome.

A fast-paced trainee blitz session and more than 80 posters rounded out a day that showcased the depth, collaboration and innovation driving pediatric research at Penn State College of Medicine.

Thank you to all faculty, trainees and staff whose work continues to advance care and outcomes for children and families.

Isabella “Bella” Dunn, a third-year medical student and Global Health Scholar at Penn State College of Medicine, has received the 2025 APHA Cancer Forum Health Equity Award in Global Health.

Dunn was recognized for her collaborative research on training community health workers in breast cancer screening in rural Ghana. Conducted with partners in Ghana and at the University of Richmond, the project reflects a growing global effort to strengthen early detection and improve outcomes for women in under-resourced regions.

Tomorrow’s global health leaders are already making an impact at Penn State College of Medicine.

Students launched the College’s first-ever global health case competition, giving learners across our MD, PhD, DrPH and MPH programs the chance to tackle real-world public health challenges. Organized by the Global Health Interest Group with mentorship from Julie Lentes, DEd, MPA, the event drew seven teams and 29 participants.

This year’s case focused on prenatal care for Latin American migrants in Pennsylvania. Students proposed solutions ranging from mobile prenatal clinics to multilingual hotlines and community-based doula programs.

The first-place team will present its project at the Penn State Global Health Conference in spring 2026.

The Beat Childhood Cancer Research Consortium at Penn State College of Medicine has welcomed the Pediatric Cancer Center Barcelona at Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona, marking its first expansion outside North America. This partnership strengthens global collaboration in pediatric cancer research and brings life-changing treatments to children worldwide.

The PCCB will serve as the European sponsor for clinical trials developed by the Consortium, helping patients access innovative therapies while contributing expertise in pediatric oncology research. The first trial, BCC018, studying the use of naxitamab for high-risk neuroblastoma, will soon be submitted to the European CTIS portal.

“This expansion reflects Penn State College of Medicine’s commitment to advancing global medicine,” said Dean Karen Kim, MD, MS. “By joining forces with Pediatric Cancer Center Barcelona, we can accelerate research and bring new hope to children and families both in Pennsylvania and around the world.”

New study finds higher melanoma rates near Pennsylvania farmland

Researchers at Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Cancer Institute analyzed five years of cancer registry data and found that adults over 50 living in a 15-county stretch of South Central Pennsylvania were 57% more likely to develop melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, than residents elsewhere in the state.

The findings suggest a link between agricultural environments, herbicide use, and melanoma risk—not just for farmers, but for entire communities. Regular skin checks and sun protection remain important, and the study highlights how human health is connected to our environment.
