The dream began with a question posed at a 1945 Methodist Conference Meeting at the White Temple Methodist Church (now part of First United Methodist Church of Miami): "What is being done about a home for the elderly?"
The "Biscayne Home for Women" was incorporated on September 15, 1948. A gift of $50,000.00 from Miss Emma Quinn of the White Temple had made possible the purchase of a home at 47 Southwest 11th Street. Miss Quinn became the first resident. The home could accommodate twelve women and was owned and operated by the White Temple Methodist Church.
With the increasing need across the area for a home for elderly men and women, the "Biscayne Home" became a Methodist District Home in 1954. A new location committee was appointed to find a site for an expanded ministry.
In April 1957, Mr. C.W. Kistler, Member of First Methodist Church of Coral Gables and owner of the Beverly Terrace Hotel, called his pastor, the Reverend Lewis Head, to suggest that his hotel might make a wonderful retirement home.
With no money and lots of prayers, the Biscayne Home directors authorized the administrator to work out a deal with Mr. Kistler. On October l, 1957, the women residents were moved to their new home on Biscayne Boulevard and 32nd Street.
"Biscayne Manor" housed 127 men and women, greatly increasing the outreach of the original dream. With age taking a toll on the sixty-year hotel, increased requests for admission and the need for a skilled nursing home, the decision was made in 1978 to relocate.
The modern three-story apartment buildings of Epworth Village were completed in September 1980. They include 290 apartments for Independent and Assisted Living. Susanna Wesley Health Center, a 120 bed skilled nursing facility, opened in April 1985. The McCray Life Enrichment Center, constructed in 1988, houses the James I. Jones Chapel, a library, beauty shop, gift shop, Fitness Center and an activities program.
Located on a 9.5 acres site, close to shopping centers, a mall, a park and hospitals, Epworth Village is indeed a five star retirement community.
Above all, Epworth Village is a testimony to the faith of United Methodists in the Miami District.
