Importance of Tummy time for Infants

With the use of car seats, infant seats and the continued recommendation for infants to sleep on their backs; it is easy to forget about Tummy Time.

Tummy time is necessary for multiple reasons including:
▪️helps to develop muscles of the hips, back, neck, shoulder and arms, necessary for early motor skills of rolling, scooting, crawling and moving up to sitting.
▪️encourages opening and strengthening of hands
▪️promotes head turning to both sides and reduces head and neck issues
▪️promotes early arm and hand control needed for fine motor skills
▪️facilitates developing sense of balance

Tummy time can be encouraged as soon as infant comes home. An easy way to start is having infant on their tummy on your chest or by carrying then in this position.

As strength improves, encourage tummy time on a flat surface, using toys or activities to encourage them to pick their head up and prop with arms. A rolled towel or small "boppy" cushion under their chest can make it easier for them. In the beginning, will be for short periods but as strength improves, should be able to hold longer and longer.

Hello, again! Kevin and Bev Schulte here!

When we aren't working at Choice Therapy, returning our patients to their highest level of function, we spend our leisure time as actively as possible.

When we aren't having lunch next to coastal Kodiak brown bears! - We take full advantage of skiing, biking and hiking around our home near Giant's Ridge. We have found that as we age it takes more effort to remain active, so we are constantly "practicing what we preach" when it comes to stretching and strengthening to maintain an active lifestyle.

We may not be as fast as we used to be, but especially around Kodiak bears, we need to be just a little faster than the slowest person! 🐻
