In order to properly train the pelvic floor muscles, there needs to be coordination, contraction, AND relaxation of the pelvic floor.
Kegels should be prescribed as needed, but the pelvic floor muscles do so much more.
If you don't know if you are able to contract, relax, and coordinate your pelvic floor muscles than you need to see a pelvic floor therapist. Find out if they have advanced, specialized training on the pelvic floor. If not, they are missing a whole section of the body that may be contributing to your hip or back pain, weakness, difficulties with urinary or bowel incontinence, or returning to sport after pregnancy and birth.

Peeing when you cough and/or sneeze is common for women, but it is NOT normal!
Why does it happen?
You may have been told that you need to strengthen your pelvic floor. But that's not always the case and most of the time, it's not the case at all. A lot of times, tightness in the pelvic floor muscles and surrounding tissues is the problem.
It also could be that there's a pressure control issue with the core AND pelvic floor muscles.
Learning more about relaxing and lengthening, 360 breathing, and how to regulate pressure are just as important as strengthening.

Want to learn more?
Make an appointment with Sister Strength PT and stop worrying about peeing when you get a cold.
