Box breathing is a breathing technique that can be very useful when you are stressed or anxious. Box breathing works by activating the part of your nervous system that helps us relax and recover from stress. In stressful situations, we normally take short, quick breaths that are part of our body’s stress response. With box breathing, you can slow down your breathing and activate your nervous systems’ calming response. Here’s how to do it:

First, breathe out of your mouth intensely for about four seconds.
Next, hold your breath for four seconds.
Then, take a very deep breath in for about four seconds as well.
Finally, hold your breath again for four seconds.
Then breathe out and repeat the cycle for as long as necessary to help you calm down.
