Reasoning and Proof relates to children’s ability to develop mathematical arguments for ways to solve a problem that are grounded in their previous understandings. When reasoning, children are looking for patterns or structures within problems that relate to patterns or structures that they have previously mastered. For example, a three-year-old child counting by 10s saying, “I know that forty comes after thirty because four comes after three.” The child reasons about a mathematical structure that was previously understood (three comes before four) and proves that 40 comes after 30 when counting by 10 based on their understanding of this structure.

Here are some examples of reasoning and proof in play and how you, as a caregiver, can support it.
