Vitamin D and Renal Failure: How Much Is Too Much?

2010 guidelines from Osteoporosis Canada recommend 400–1000 IU of vitamin D daily for most adults, and 800–2000 IU daily for older adults and those at increased risk for osteoporosis.
Amounts in excess of these levels should only be taken under the advice of your medical doctor. The main consequence of vitamin D toxicity is a buildup of calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia), which can cause nausea and vomiting, weakness, and frequent urination. Vitamin D toxicity might progress to bone pain and kidney problems, such as the formation of calcium stones.
