Ribs can be a delicious meal, but they can also be a very gratifying thing to treat by a manual physical therapist. Manipulation to these joints, and dry needing to the levator scapulae muscle, can be very helpful for posterior shoulder pain!! If you are struggling with this issue, let me know!!

These are from a seminar I taught last weekend in the area. We were covering all the different useful anatomical structures that can be needled. On a patient this would be more finely tuned. A common error by needlers is to focus too much on muscles when the pain is in a non-muscular tissue. Give me a call if you need some pain around the knee area!!

One of my all time favorite Robin Williams movies is Patch Adams, where a man committed to a psychiatric institution becomes a medical doctor attempting to restore greater humanity to the profession.

One of my favorite scenes from this movie is when Patch is in the psych ward explaining to his attending (but not attentive) physician that he has had a breakthrough in his treatment, after Patch helps one of his inmates to overcome a fear of squirrels.

As a result, Patch wants to continue to listen and help people with their problems. When he relays this news, the doctor dismissively says “That’s what I do,” to which Patch responds, “But you suck at it!”

I want to apply the idea of “Raise Your Game” to the use of spinal manipulation by physical therapists. Although we get some training in that, our profession’s use of this valuable tool can best be summed up by Patch.

As a result, many patients with painful neuromusculoskeletal conditions do not usually think first of seeking out a physical therapist. They generally think of going to other practitioners.

Direct-access laws can help to change this trend, but only if physical therapists have quick, powerful methods that are used appropriately. Sadly, I believe the PT profession is unaware of its shortcomings in this regard.
