The 2025 placebo-controlled human trial titled “Health benefits of Montmorency tart cherry juice supplementation in adults with mild to moderate Ulcerative Colitis”, published in Life, found that drinking 130 ml of diluted Montmorency tart cherry juice twice daily for six weeks led to a 40% reduction in faecal calprotectin, a clinically validated biomarker of gut inflammation. This reduction indicates a significant anti-inflammatory effect at the intestinal level in adults with mild-to-moderate Ulcerative colitis, compared with participants who consumed a placebo drink matched for taste and appearance.

In addition to biological improvements, the study reported a 9% increase in health-related quality of life, measured using validated questionnaires including the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (IBDQ). Participants consumed the cherry juice alongside standard medical treatment, and no significant changes were observed in blood inflammatory markers, suggesting the effect was localised to the gut. Researchers from the University of Hertfordshire and University of Central Lancashire concluded that Montmorency tart cherry juice may serve as a supportive dietary intervention, rather than a replacement therapy, for managing ulcerative colitis symptoms.

Gingerbread Syrup – Simmer 1 cup water + 1 cup brown sugar + 1 tbsp molasses + 1 tsp ginger + ½ tsp cinnamon + pinch cloves for 10 min, strain, cool.

Peppermint Syrup – Heat 1 cup sugar + 1 cup water until dissolved, cool slightly, add 1 tsp peppermint extract.

Cinnamon Vanilla Syrup – Simmer 1 cup water + 1 cup sugar + 2 cinnamon sticks 10 min, cool, add 1 tsp vanilla.

Vanilla Bean Syrup – Simmer 1 cup water + 1 cup sugar + 1 split vanilla bean 10–12 min, cool and strain.

Cranberry Orange Syrup – Simmer 1 cup cranberries + 1 cup water + 1 cup sugar + orange peel 10 min, strain.

Spiced Maple Syrup – Warm 1 cup maple syrup + 1 cinnamon stick + 2 cloves + pinch nutmeg 5 min, cool.

Apple Pie Syrup – Simmer 1 cup apple juice + 1 cup brown sugar + 1 cinnamon stick + pinch nutmeg 10 min.

Brown Sugar Butter Syrup – Simmer 1 cup brown sugar + ½ cup water + 2 tbsp butter 8 min, add 1 tsp vanilla.
