Come meet a local writer, Marissa Eller, at our next game night on Friday March 6th as we celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday and “Read Across America Week.”
Marissa Eller is a novelist with chronic pain and an abundance of emotions. She holds a BA in English from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and an MFA in Writing from Lindenwood University, which she uses in her work as an academic consultant. She resides in Hickory, North Carolina with her family and rescue cat, all of whom she couldn’t love more if she tried. When not writing, reading, or helping students, she can be found thinking entirely too much about her favorite TV shows, obsessing over a band she’s loved since she was fifteen, or enjoying an afternoon nap. Her debut novel JOINED AT THE JOINTS was named a “Can’t Miss Summer Debut” by Kirkus and a best book of the year by the Bank Street College of Education. Her sophomore novel LEFT ON READ is forthcoming in 2026, along with a series of three historical romance novels published under the pen name Jade Hendren.
Drive around to the back of the building. Yard Sale is inside.

In the beginning.... there was an annual T-ball game sponsored by Catawba County Mental Health's Early Childhood Intervention Services (ECIS). Then, in 1994, the Hickory Crawdads came to town...and teamed with Catawba County Mental Health and Conover School's Blueprints of a Dream to develop four teams of players and buddies (players' helpers) who enjoyed a seven-week season culminating with the final game at L.P. Frans stadium (home of the Hickory Crawdads).
In 1996, a Winter bowling league formed. The bowling league has grown in popularity over the years. Our Choir started around the year 2014 and became a full-time offering in 2015. We offered swimming some in the early 2000’s and then it went away, but came back to our program in 2015, thanks to the help of Newton Recreation Center.
In late 2016, a long-term goal was fulfilled and a dream came true. Walkin’ Roll Activities Center opened for use. For so many years, our faithful leader and founder, Sharon K. Barlow has operated this organization out of her home office and a small tow-behind trailer.
Looking back over the last 24 years, we can see that friendships have formed and families have grown up in the league. Young players that played the games in the first few seasons are now coaching the next generation.
