At our recent Ohio Residents' Rights Council meeting we asked resident council presidents if they felt comfortable raising a concern and 70% agreed. As a resident living in a nursing home, assisted living, or adult group home you have the right to voice grievances and recommend changes in policies and services to the home's staff, department of health, or the ombudsman and do so without fear of reprisal. 🧠 Understanding Dementia
Did you know dementia is an umbrella term for a range of neurological conditions that affect memory, thinking, and behavior over time?

Some common types include:
• Alzheimer’s disease – slowly impacts memory and everyday tasks.
• Frontotemporal dementia – affects thinking and behavior due to frontal and temporal lobe damage.
• Lewy body dementia – can cause issues with movement, mood, and cognition.
• Vascular dementia – results from disrupted blood flow to the brain, often after a stroke.

Understanding the different types of dementia helps us provide better care, support, and compassion for those living with these conditions. 💙

𝐐: What can I do if my skilled nursing facility (SNF) says I have to leave before I feel ready?
𝐀: If you are receiving care from an SNF and are told Medicare will stop paying for your care (meaning you will be discharged) and you think you still need care, you have the right to a fast (expedited) review, called an appeal. Note: The steps are different if you have a Medicare Advantage plan.
Contact your local SHIP for help understanding your SNF coverage or for help appealing a discharge or reduction in care. Contact information for your local SHIP is listed at www.shiphelp.org/ships

Our Story

Easterseals Central and Southeast Ohio is the official Ohio State Long-Term Care Ombudsman sponsoring agency, for the Region 6 Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. As mandated by the federal Older Americans Act and Ohio law, the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program advocates for excellence in long-term services and supports wherever consumers live.

Ombudsmen do not regulate nursing homes and home health agencies, but do work with providers, residents, their families and other representatives to resolve problems and concerns.

The Region 6 Long-Term Care Ombudsman serves eight counties in Ohio including: Franklin, Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Licking, Madison, Pickaway, and Union while also advocating for MyCare Ohio consumers in Clark, Greene and Montgomery counties. Ombudsman staff and volunteers focus their time on educating consumers of long term care services and supports and their families, empowering them to know their rights and to voice their conerns. Here in Region 6 our inter-generational team of paid staff and volunteers are committed to advancing person-centered care and preserving resident rights.
