πŸ‘Ÿ New Blog Post: Benefits Of Wearing Nike Frees πŸ‘Ÿ

There are thousands of different models of shoes available. From barefoot, to rock solid ankle support, and every option in between. We love having variability of footwear at Functional Physical Therapy, and today we are going to highlight one particular option.

πŸ”— https://functional-physicaltherapy.com/blog/f/benefits-of-wearing-nike-frees

πŸ‘Ÿ Nike Frees provide minimal support to the foot and ankle but do provide more cushioning under the foot than a barefoot shoe. This unique combination makes them a great choice in a shoe rotation.

πŸ“² If you have been having foot and ankle issues and have not addressed your footwear choices, contact Functional Physical Therapy to learn more about how exercise and proper footwear may help your situation!

πŸ“Ή New Video Drop Wednesday: Scapular Mobility In Redcord πŸ“Ή

If you are looking to improve your shoulder mobility or upper body strength but you have not been working on the scapula, you are missing out!

The scapula is the link between the body and the arms, and it can often cause restrictions with range of motion. When we work on increasing scapular mobility in Redcord,
it links the arm with the core muscles as well.

πŸ”— Linking the core and shoulder will increase upper body strength, throwing speed, and decrease overuse injuries for many throwing athletes!

πŸ“² If your training or rehabilitation has been lacking scapular stability, it may be time for you to contact Functional Physical Therapy!

⚾️ Sports Injury Of The Week: Broken Hamate Bone ⚾️

Despite just being the first few days of Spring Training last week, young Baltimore Orioles star Jackson Holliday was diagnosed with a broken hamate bone in his right wrist. The injury supposedly happened after a routine session in the batting cage and was not from being hit by a pitch.

βœ‹ The hamate is located on the pinky side of the wrist and is known mainly for its hook shape. That shape is critical for supporting the ligaments that travel through the carpal tunnel. But its hook shape also makes it very susceptible to fractures .

There are a number of surgical and non-surgical options available for the hamate bone. Although a repair or fixation (inserting a plate and screws) is not always the best option because of poor blood flow in the area. Instead, Holliday opted for removal of the fragments of broken bone, which means an extended period of time in a cast to stabilize the area.

πŸ“² If you have had issues with your hamate or your wrist, it may be time for you to contact Functional Physical Therapy for your initial assessment!

Why are we always including the hip abductors in our exercises at Functional Physical Therapy? Well, there are so many benefits to getting these muscles involved, including:

βž– Improving the stability of the hips and core.

βž– Decreasing compensatory tightness within the trunk and lower back when these muscles are deactivated.

βž– Improving the ability for your body to find and maintain a neutral pelvis with activity.

βž– Decreasing stress and strain on the hips, knees, and ankles when changing directions, catching your balance, and cutting on the athletic field.

πŸ’¬ And many more!

πŸ“² So if you are not familiar with your hip abductors and are having difficulty with some of the activities listed above, contact Functional Physical Therapy to schedule your initial assessment!

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ New Blog Post: 2026 Winter Olympics πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Last week, the Olympics began in Italy, and it is truly some of the best viewing in all of athletics. Athletes from around the world come together and compete for the love of sport.

πŸ”— https://functional-physicaltherapy.com/blog/f/2026-winter-olympics

There is a great deal to learn from the techniques and approaches by the athletes themselves. But there is also evidence during every competition that speaks to the work of the medical staff behind the scenes.

πŸ“½οΈ New Video Drop Wednesday: Hip Articulations πŸ“½οΈ

Our hip joints move differently than the other joints in our body, so they need to be moved accordingly! Most joints work in a single plane of motion, but both the hips and the shoulders move in three planes of motion.

Try this hip motion, which combines rotation, abduction, adduction, flexion, and extension in one simple exercise. Keeping your hip moving in all the planes of motion will help prevent stiffness, pain, and compensations in your everyday activities.

⬆️ By performing these motions in quadruped (all fours), we add in shoulder and core stability to make a very well rounded warm-up exercise for athletic performance!

πŸ“² When you are ready to learn how to move all your joints in all their available ranges of motion safely, contact Functional Physical Therapy. Let’s keep your entire body moving optimally for your entire life!

⛷️ Sports Injury Of The Week: Competing With An ACL Tear ⛷️

During the last tune up prior to competing in the Olympics, Lindsay Vonn crashed and suffered a torn ACL. Vonn has an extensive history of knee injuries, and attempted to compete in the Olympic Games with a large brace to support her knee. See was airlifted out again following a crash in her first official run yesterday.

πŸ”„ Although we often associate an ACL tear with immediate surgery, many athletes have performed without the structural support of an ACL. Famously, former NBA athlete DeJuan Blair was born without an ACL in either knee and played a full college and professional career without restriction.

What does stand apart for Vonn’s situation is the fact that her other knee has been surgically replaced! Generally, an athlete competing in the short term on an injured body part will take additional stresses on the opposite leg. But, given the integrity of her other knee, that may not be possible.

‼️ We do not advise trying to play through any torn ligaments without proper medical clearance!

πŸ“² If you have been dealing with chronic joint issues and restrictions, Functional Physical Therapy is the place for you! We will address your entire body, improve your compensations, and have you moving as freely as possible!

πŸ“Ή New Video Drop Wednesday: Let’s Talk Regressions πŸ“Ή

A lot of our exercises in Redcord are pretty eye-catching. And you might think that they all are very difficult to perform. But the truth is, every exercise in Redcord is done exactly to the limits of what each individual patient can handle.

We have previously posted patients performing this side-lying hip abduction exercise while lifting the top leg. If that was too challenging, we can perform the same exercise while pushing down with both legs together!

πŸ“² No matter how strong or weak someone believes that they are, we can tailor each exercise in Redcord to meet their specific abilities. When you are ready to experience exactly how we do that at Functional Physical Therapy, call to schedule your initial full body assessment!
